Please don't quote idiots when you make a sensible point. Soon after '911' I telephoned the two airlines asking them to confirm or deny that those flights used Depleted Uranium balllast. I got no reply but I did get a visit from a rather obvious CIA fool soon after.
If there was DU ballast on those planes then the death rate in New York is going to soar over the coming years, perhaps that is what you are witnessing though doubtless there was plenty of radioactive material in the WTC. I have absolutely no idea why airlines deliberately carried nuclear waste as ballast for so many years ( seemingly the practice is being discontinued ) but I imagine it was partly to discourage anyone from shooting down an airliner over their own territory, partly just as a cheap way to dispose of nuclear waste.
The fact is most wide-bodied aircraft used DU as ballast at the time, a fact that hidden until the El-Al crash in Bijlmer, Amsterdam, started producing radiation related deaths and a grassroots group forced an inquiry. The Lockerbie crash site in Scotland also was missing at least one of the pallets of DU ballast, which is unsurprising given it's pyrophoric nature.
