solidarity gathering at square this morning - pics

russell square, the five month old london squatted social centre, faces eviction. this morning, around thirty supporters waited outside the building to greet the bailliffs.

the building was festooned with an array of flags and banners. the mood was light but determined. around 9 am, more and more supporters started gathering infront of the building, and some of rhythms of resistance samba band turned up. a passing beat copper stopped to see what it was about, but didn't seem to be too bothered, giving the usual advice not to obstruct the pavement etc.

the forward intelligence team were notable by their absence, despite a substantial number of luminaries of the london activist and anarchist community available for modelling - perhaps 'wanker' neil and his colleagues have finally got enough pics? - probably not.

some time around eleven, the bailliffs turned up, took a look, made a couple of phone calls and went away.

er, that's it.

russell square is hosting a festival of resistance all weekend

I stayed from 9am till almost 2pm and nobody mentioned that the bailifs and been and gone. I was starving and would have left much earlier if I had known.

It is not clear that the two 'officers' from Camden Council were actually bailiffs. From what I've been told, it appears that they basically complained about the noise coming out the speakers. They didn't bring any notices or legal papers for the eviction (which is what bailiffs 'should do' during evictions)

My personal view is that they came down just to check up the situation at the Square, and then report back to their bosses at the council. And that is precisely why it was great that people like you made it this morning down there. The fact that the these council officers, bailiffs, or whatever they may be, came at midd morning and then left, it doesn't mean that they 'came and went'. They could have turned up again later on, with a bigger crew from the council, or more probably on a later day.

So, great you stayed till 2pm .. and by the way, you could have got some food from the kitchen if you were starving :-)

ta!
