Urgent: STANMER needs you TONIGHT!

brightonian | 04.06.2006 13:44 | Culture | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | South Coast

We urgently need you to stay in the squated farmhouse in Stanmer village TONIGHT BECAUSE WE FACE EVICTION TOMMOROW MORNING.

The beautiful space has been kept open for something like a month now, its a gorgeous, huge old farmhouse just over the hill behind Park Village that the council wants to turn into private flats (they're selling it to an ex-councillor, what a surprise). The whole village is meant to be owned by the city of Brighton since it was donated by the Lord who previously owned it, and the councils decision flies in the face of this. The whole of Stanmer village is behind the squatters right to remain.

If we get loads of us then the baliffs, who are scheduled to arrive tomorrow morning to evict the house, wont be able to. We expect them to arrive early in the morning (monday) so we're calling for people to sleep over tonight.

We're having a meeting about how we're going to resist at 8pm tonight. We should have loads of people so we shouldn’t need to be offensive or anything. If you cant make 8pm then turn up tonight anyway.

Bring a sleeping bag and mat!

Where is Stanmer Village?
Stanmer Village is just outside Brighton. The nearest train station is Falmer. Otherwise take the 25 bus and ask the driver to let you off outside Stanmer Park (from Brighton, the stop before Sussex Uni). You can drive there too, following the 25 route as mentioned above, pass the traffic lights at the end of Moulsecoomb, then follow the bendy road round till there's an off-road to your left. Go into that and follow the road till stanmer village. The easiest way to get there from Brighton is probably by a lovely bike

a small victory!

Yesterday's eviction was resisted! Lots of people were inside and out the building. The ones inside banged drums, etc and made a shitload of noise which seems to have freaked out the few baliffs and council members. We are considering to take this to the high court, if even just to buy us an extra 3 weeks.

So the social centre is open again for events, and meetings etc. Come down!

Eviction Resisted!

Thanks to brilliant solidarity effort eviction was resisted in Monday.
This has inspired a typically unsympathetic article in today's Argus.

Hopefully a counter-report by activists will be available soon.
