Aldermaston goes on a recruitment drive

Gerry Gerbil | 31.05.2006 13:39 | Anti-militarism

The atomic bomb factory at Aldermaston has just advertised 18 jobs.

Do you want a career that goes with a bang? Do you want to "push the boundaries of conventional thinking" by building megadeath weaponry? Do you want to work for an employer that is "answering questions that haven't yet been asked"? Well if you do then the Aldermaston nuclear bomb factory - sorry, the "Atomic Weapons Establishment" - dedicated to producing weapons of mass destruction - sorry, "maintaining the UK's nuclear deterrent" - wants YOU! In the latest weekly bulletin for jobseekers in universities, published by www.jobs.ac.uk, Aldermaston has advertised no less than 18 posts. Looks like the decision on the 'next generation' of nukes has already been taken...

Not evidence

The fact that 18 jobs are advertised is not sufficient evidence for the claim of a new generation of nuclear weapons. A comparison with the number of jobs offered in previous years together with job loss figures (retirement, secondment etc) would be useful.

Ho hum. I suppose I should have added a smiley to my wee news item. I just didn't expect a po-faced academic to treat it as a testable hypothesis requiring a full bibliography and literature search. This is Indymedia, Roy me boy, not a research seminar.

Why did I post it if it wasn't "proof" of anything? Well, maybe I was just narked to see a major part of the UKHE jobs bulletin taken up with jobs for nuclear arms production. There are better places to advertise such 'work', although given the low moral standards and political unconsciousness of academe these days I can see that the bomb factory will attract quite a few applicants high on calibre and low on scruples...
