There’s lots more happening, and while we continue to produce newsletters which cover a wide range of events, the fewer newsletters we need to produce, the more time we can spend campaigning. There is a strength in an alternative internet news outlet, which can be visited daily, and it makes sense that it is even more actively used, and as a good complement to the newsletters we continue to produce.

1. FILM ‘LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER’ – FRI JUNE 9th

Bristol Stop The War Coalition are hosting a screening of the film ‘Letter To The Prime Minister’. Directed by Julia Guest, the film documents Jo Wilding’s visits to Iraq both before and after the invasion. It won the Gold Award For Best Independent Film at the recent Al-Jazeera film festival. Julia Guest will introduce a discussion after the film.

The film’s website ( http://www.alettertotheprimeminister.co.uk/) says: ‘Offering a singular take on the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq, 'A Letter to the Prime Minister' follows Jo Wilding on her remarkable journey of the last few years, in solidarity with the people of Iraq. Narrated as a letter to Tony Blair and using original diary extracts, from her challenging of the legality of the devastating economic sanctions imposed on the country, through to her activities in Baghdad before and during the 2003 Invasion, the film traces the non-violent resistance to US/UK policy in the region. Wilding serves as witness to the destruction of the lives of ordinary people during the bombing campaign and their subsequent neglect by Occupation forces and the interim authorities but she also acts, forming the Boomchucka Circus to work with school children and refugees. In April 2004, that help extended to travelling into Falluja, when even Al Jazeera had pulled out, to stand alongside the civilians trapped and targeted by US forces. Exclusive footage from the besieged city of Falluja creates a moving picture of the terrible impact UK & US foreign policy has had on ordinary Iraqi people, while the film itself stands as a powerful act of remembrance and questions an unjust and damaging Occupation.’

Attila the Stockbroker and David Rovics are the real Anglo-American alliance on their fourth UK tour: the voice of the opposition! Hard-hitting poetry and song, raging against the policies of Bush and Blair, their illegal Iraq war and the corporations which pull their strings. Some people think politics should be kept out of music. We don’t!!

David Rovics is from Massachusetts. Writes incredibly perceptive, intelligent, incisive, angry songs, sung quietly and tunefully to a supremely accomplished acoustic guitar backing: the heir to the mantle of Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs. He has a growing following round the world and in the UK, among many other things, has done two sessions on Andy Kershaw’s Radio 3 show in the course of two previous tours with Attila. On this tour he will be accompanied on stage by Allie Rosenblatt, who has sung with him many times previously both live and on CD. ‘In these days of ongoing neo-conservatism he carries the torch of dissent and protest – in fact if the great Phil Ochs were to come back from the dead tonight he’d probably be hailed as the new David Rovics’ (Andy Kershaw)

Attila the Stockbroker is from Brighton. In August 2005, BBC Radio 4 celebrated his 25 years and well over 2000 gigs as a performance poet/songwriter with a programme entitled ‘Giving It Lip’… apposite! He writes angry, poignant, impassioned, sometimes downright silly poems and songs on a wide variety of subjects, accompanying himself on his trusty mandola, Nelson. Among many other things he recently took ‘Seagulls Ska’ to Number 17 in the singles charts with a song demanding a new stadium for his beloved Brighton & Hove Albion FC, where he is Poet in Residence. He’s also an accomplished fiddle player and will be joining David for a few songs. ‘Whether he’s ranting a poem or bashing out a song, there’s something magnificent about Attila in full flight’ (Ian McMillan, BBC Radio 4)

There will be a short introductory set from Tracey Curtis, a radical singer songwriter from Wales, formerly of punk-folk outfit Shelley’s Children, now making a return to the live scene after ten years away starting a family.

We've kept vigil every night (except Sundays) since a few days after 11th Sept 2001, & we'll keep Vigil into the future, but we do need your support to keep our flame alive.
