CARDIFF ARMY RECRUITMENT PROTEST

ADAM JOHANNES | 28.05.2006 15:29

SHUT IT DOWN!

Protest new army recruitment centre in Cardiff
Saturday 3 June at 1.30, Wood Street (Opposite Bus station)

At a time when Britain is engaged in imperialist wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - Is it really appropriate to have an army recruitment building in the town centre?

School Students against the War, supported by Cardiff Stop the War Coalition have called for a mass demonstration to signal our opposition to anyone from Cardiff going to Iraq to kill and be killed in a war for oil.

Everyone welcome - Bring placards, banners, drums, slogans etc.

CARDIFF MP'S VOTE FOR A LIFE IN PRISON FOR ARMY REFUSENIKS

Resistance to the war in Iraq is growing rapidly among rank-and-file soldiers and the government is out to smash that resistance.

Disgracefully, Julie Morgan MP, Jenny Willott MP and Alun Michael MP voted this week for a change in the law that could see "soldiers of conscience" like Ben Griffin and Flight Lt. Malcolm Kendall Smith thrown into prison for life.

Currently, military personnel can only face life imprisonment for deserting or for refusing to fight in wars. Only 19 MPs voted for an amendment opposing the government's plan to extend the penalty to those refusing to take part in occupations.

The amendment was defeated overwhelmingly by the combined votes of the Lib Dems, Tories & the majority of Labour MPs. Opposition was
led by the Socialist Campaign Group in the Labour Party,
Plaid Cymru and the SNP.
