(Toscana / Chiantishire) CASES OF DEATHS BY POISONING ARE INCREASING

Polpetta | 23.05.2006 17:36 | Animal Liberation | World

Foreign residents of Tuscany are fighting a battle against poison baits which are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of animals each year.
Cats and dogs and wild animals the baiters are not fussy what they don't massacre with their shot guns they catch in illegal traps and snares or murder with poisons. It took my dog 18 hrs to die a horrendous death.

This is the only article in english so far but there are at least 20 articles in italian and we are keeping the pressure on, the local authorities are very keen to keep this quiet with the tourist season just kicking off.

CASES OF DEATHS BY POISONING ARE INCREASING

Morsels with strychnine disseminated between Poggibonsi, Barberino, Certaldo, Tavarnelle and San Casciano. About 250 animals, including dogs, cats, foxes and porcupines killed by the lethal bait.

BARBERINO VAL D’ELSA – In civil Chianti, there are those who have for some time been sowing incivility under the form of morsels treated with poison, often strychnine, a terrible scourge since it often kills domestic animals. The latest news bulletin reports the deaths of at least five dogs, numerous cats and also wild animals like foxes and porcupines. Examinations carried out by Dr. Paolo Bandinelli, a veterinarian at San Casciano, and the Institute of Forensic Toxicology of Florence, headed by Doctor Mari, confirmed the presence of strychnine in many cases. A poison that does not decay and that, when added to morsels of food and planted throughout the countryside, can cause the deaths of children as well as of animals. Simply collecting wildflowers can be dangerous.
Provincial police are investigating the poisonings, which have been reported in a strip of territory running from Chianti to Valdelsa and passing through Barberino, Poggibonsi, Certaldo, Tavarnelle, Montespertoli and San Casciano. The mayors of some of these communes have published warnings. At San Lorenzo a Vigliano, a rural village near Barberino, a committee was established and a petition circulated for the collection of signatures. It was then presented to the communal administration in Barberino. Corinne Voss, a member of the committee, spoke in the petition of a “battle of civility.” “For 10 years,” she asserted, “domestic animals have been killed, including sheep, as well as wild foxes, feral cats and porcupines, with morsels of food poisoned with mixtures of substances, including cyanide and strychnine, both strictly forbidden by law. In recent days, five dogs and a cat were poisoned between Barberino Val d’Elsa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. A cat was also shot in the area dedicated to the capture and restocking of wild animals at San Lorenzo a Vigliano.
“Sooner or later,” Voss continued, “some child walking along a highway or playing in the Chianti countryside will suffer. And how will we respond to that? The communes must intervene, exercising their responsibility and their powers of repression to deal with this phenomenon, which is due to a few unscrupulous persons.”
The committee provided the specific technical information needed to sign the petition. Send a response e-mail under the title "Oggetto: Bocconi avvelenati" (Object: Poisoned Morsels). Write in the text: “I endorse the appeal in regard to the poisoned morsels,” followed by your name and last name and postal and e-mail addresses. All the e-mails should be signed and sent to  c.voss@tin.it. Ms. Voss is representative of the Committee Contro i Bocconi Avelenati. Once the names have been collected,” Voss reported, “we’ll ask for a meeting with the communal council to present the appeal and the signatures.”
Further information: Corinne Voss, 50021 Barberino Val D'Elsa (Firenze). Tel. 055 8076590; mail:  c.voss@tin.it The poisoning phenomenon has been growing at an alarming rate in recent months. According to data provided by the Florence provincial police, who as already noted are investigating the case, 156 dogs and 75 cats were poisoned in 2005. If the deaths of other animals are added, the total for the province was 252 as compared with 230 in 2004.
A farmer of British origin, Charlie Holmes, is also battling this plague after his German shepherd was poisoned. At Certaldo, the president of the Association of Truffle Hunters of the Valdelsa, Athos Signorini, has brusquely denied involvement of his organization’s members in the poisonings. In fact, the owners of poisoned animals have tended to blame other suspects “and we have reported them to the investigators,” said M.C., an architect of Montespertoli, who is a resident of the small village of La Ripa. Like Holmes, he found his own five-year-old dog dead in his garden. The animal’s body was examined by Dr. Bandinelli and the Istituto di Tossicologia Forense di Firenze. The verdict was: strychnine.
