Protest against BNP 'councillor' at the first full meeting of Birmingham council

Andy | 13.05.2006 16:46 | Anti-racism | Social Struggles | Birmingham

Sharon Ebanks, the 'councillor' for Kingstanding, will be at the councils AGM on Tues 23rd May. So will anti-racist and anti-fascist protestors. Make your voice heard.

Birmingham City Council will have its AGM on the evening of 23rd May. This is where all the newly elected councillors come to the first full council meeting, and I'm sure all sorts of official palava taked place.

Sharon Ebanks, the contested BNP councillor (contested because there was believed to be a classic Brum 'could organise a pissup etc' council cockup when they counted the votes). However many voted she got, we will be there to protest against the politics of fascism and xenophobia getting a foothold in Brum. Turn up from 4pm, we'll be there till 7. Be ready to MAKE SOME NOISE!!

The protest has been called by Birmingham Unite Against Fascism. More ifo can be obtained from:

other anti-racist groups in birmingham?

13.05.2006 17:27

i'm new to birmingham and i'd like to get involved with anti-racist/anti-fascist stuff but i'm not interested in getting involved with Unite Against Fascism. UAF are another SWPie front, and with the likes of Ken Livingstone and even racist zionists like Luciana Burger involved, I'd rather commit to getting involved with an anti-fascist group that isn't hierarchically structured or just another pathetic front.

Does anyone know if there's an Antifa group in birmingham? I've seen some cool stencils in Digbeth over racist graffitti. How can I get in touch with them?

In Solidarity,

Hari

It is not only a protest against one councillor, it is a protest against the racist BNP and against them spewing hate in Birmingham.

"pro government"? Not at all. Many demos have been held against NL's decision to wage war on Iraq, for instance.

"Stalin" - what a typical name for a fash to choose.

Trot.

There seems to be a missing comment.

Did that one allack the anti-fascists for being fascists? Not long ago the SWP was telling people to vote in support of Fascism. Where there was no SWP candidate their word was to vote Labour. Those who followed their advice voted to enrich the Rich, clobber the Poor, and build New Labour's Global Fascism. In my book that was a vote for Fascism.

It seems that a comment from "Stalin" has been deleted. I have as much reason to hate Stalin as anyone, but have to ask if once Lenin made his mistake, was there any way to stop Hitler other that Stalin's way. If someone as clever as Wittgenstein thought that that was the only way to stop Hitler we have to be very careful.

But using Historical names as aliases should be discouraged. It might make it difficult to Google to Bukanin or Makhno when Google is filled up with leads to people using those names as aliases.

the comment Illyan refers to was hidden because it was felt it broke our editorial guidelines. This is because it contained an offensive reference that's considered racist.

No conspiracy, just cleaning the newswire :)
