CURITIBA, BRASIL, MARCH ‘06

‘The model of civilization based on oil is being challenged more and more,
and the transition to a post-oil model is inevitable. Damages made to
biodiversity have not only transformed extended regions where the oil
industry operates, but have also immersed the people who inhabit these
regions in poverty.’

15.) OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT CHAVEZ RE. COALMINING

‘Some of us were in Venezuela at the time of the World Social Forum and
participated in a popular mobilisation against the government plans to
open new open pit coal mines in the west of the country that would destroy
the lands of the indigenous living there and irremediably pollute the
principal rivers of the area. The issue raised is also much larger: that
of the model of development and energy policies that will be adopted by
the progressive governments of Latin America.
We ask you to read the open letter and send it to President Chavez. It is
posted in Spanish, English and French on the Peoples’ Global Action web
page at  http://www.nadir.org/nadir/initiativ/agp/free/imf/venezuela/2006/
