1 million people to donate 2p

Two university students who started a charity to build schools in neglected corners of the world are trying to get 1 million people to send in 2 p each.

A recently formed charity, Educate for Life, is trying to make its name, in a big way. It wants 1 million people to send in 2 p each. Their reasoning is that everyone can spare 2p, it is virtually worthless in its own, but if enough people send it in the it really can make a huge difference.
They are planning to build an 'eco-school' in India with the money raised. It will run on solar and wind energy and grow its own crops. The idea is to show through example that living can be sustainable, but also to provide much needed education to children that normally have no access and whose families, friends and neighbours are stuck in a constant cycle of poverty.
As Kofi Annan said in his 2001 Nobel Peace Lecture, 'Poverty begins when even one child is denied his or her fundamental right to education.' So if enough people send in their 2 pence peices, perhaps there will be a few less children in the world facing this denial.

This must be some sort of belated April Fool's joke. Who the hell is going to spend 20p on a stamp to donate 2p?

Yeah right

maybe

that's why they also give the option of donating in person, by bank transfer or putting the money directly into the charity's account.

Hi there my friendly sceptics,

this is the charity that I help run and it is no joke. We really want people to do this.' Why not?' is what we sa. 2p or 22p, it is so little to one person, but it really will make a massive difference combined. We have already collected enough money to fund two children in our school for a year, so it has already been worth it, but 1 million is better!

All the best,
Ed, co-founder of Educate for Life
