A fresh Rhythms of Resistance (RoR) percussion group, based in Manchester, rocked Yorkshire with an open samba workshop on 2nd April 2006.
25 sambistas, including mestres (musical directors/conductors) from known UK samba bands, attended the workshop. The aim was to share the spirit of contemporary resistance against injustice, war and global capitalism, with samba bands in the North. The workshop included samba rhythms led by Manchester Rhythms of Resistance, a discussion and an information stall.
A Manchester sambista commented: "Carnival and music are vital components of protest for world peace, environmentalism, equality and human rights. It's all about promoting active
participation, non-hierarchy, a DIY culture, political expression, harmony and fun! The
samba band radiates energy and good vibes. We are so inspired by Rhythms of Resistance bands popping out all over the World we wanted to spread the message and create a group up north in sunny Manchester!"
