BARCELONA PRISONERS UPDATE

Small update on the situation on prisoners from the 4th and 9th of february in barcelona

Returning from the demo we had today here in barcelona for the prisoners of february 4th, i saw that a small group of people had also done a solidarity action in london yesterday and i wanted to say THANK YOU!!! and give a small update on the situation here...........

The demo we had today actually went pretty well....... running around town yelling "en el ayuntamiento--miento, miento, miento" (in the town hall, lies, lies, lies) is always good for one's positive outlook on life..........

in other good news, one of the two february the 9th prisoners, held on little or no evidence but still charged in connection with arson attacks on companies here in spain that benefit from prison labour, WAS RELEASED YESTERDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ignasi's charges were not dropped, and he still awaits trial, but his release was felt as a huge victory for all of us who have been fighting to get all of the february prisoners (from both the 4th and 9th) out of prison!!!!!!!!

now we need to work as hard as possible for the freedom of ruben (the other february 9th prisoner) and alex, juan, and rodrigo (the three february 4th prisoners). in the case of alex, juan, and rodrigo the judge is denying bail based on racism, stating that since all three have south american nationality, they pose a "flight risk" and are therefore condemned to remain in "preventative custody" until their trial, which could take two or three years to come to court. this statement was also made with full knowledge of the fact that all three have school, friendship, and family ties here in barcelona, and even more ridiculous when one considers that rodrigo has not only chilean nationality, but italian nationality as well (making him a part of the EU) and the fact that his family has lived here in barcelona for the past three years and all have EU nationality. He could equally be described as being "italian", but the courts choose to view him as "chilean" for their own racist, corrupt purposes. Another ridiculous excuse being used to deny them bail is their supposed life as "okupas" (squatters), which prompted the court to write a two page document describing the so-called life habits of "okupas" who, according to the court, always reject "normal" lives and cut family ties in order to embrace "la vida okupa"......... again ridiculous when one considers some of the 4th of february support group's most active members are the mother, sister, and brother of rodrigo, as well as the parents of alex.
