Letter from former Tory leader Micheal Howard to a constituent on GM crop Terminator Genes.
Sad git appears to be leaning towards allowing it after further 'testing'....

Letter in reponse to the FoE Terminator Genes campaign.

House of Commons, London.

01 March 2006.

Dear...........

Thank you for your leter regarding 'terminator technology'. The development of genetically modified crops, and wider GM advances, pose a number of difficult questions.

On the one hand, many people are concerned that there could be a risk of cross-fertilization which may allow genetic modifications to pass between crops, and that it would not be fair to supply seed to the developing world if part of the subsequent crop could not be used for planting.

On the other hand, these new technologies may produce better, more disease-resistant, and higher-yielding crops. At a time when starvation and absolute poverty are still prevalent in many parts of the world, such technologies could play an important part in solving these problems.

Given this potential, I feel it would be more prudent to wait and see where the technology leads than to reject it outright; as such, I am unable to sign EDM 1300.

Yours sincerely, Michael Howard.
