Support detained asylum seekers
leeds no borders | 03.03.2006 16:37
leeds based prision and detention centre visiting group startingup, please come to talk re:prison support
There are many people in the UK who are destitute and face deportation after "failing" to get through the asylum process. As access to legal support decreases and decisions are made faster these numbers grow. Most of these people are then left in limbo with no legal status, no support and potentially facing deportation or homelessness.
We are trying to establish a local visiting group to visit people in detention centres and prisions (some "deportees" are illegally held in prisions) to offer support - either in being someone to chat to or helping with their legal case.
Emma Guinn from the National Coalition for Anti- Deportation campaigns http://www.ncadc.org.uk/ will be coming to speak about how visits to detention centres and prisions can provide useful support.
This will be at The CommonPlace, 23-25 Wharf St, Leeds LS2
on Tues 14th March at 7pm
if you can't make this talk but are interested in doing visits please email prisonvisitgroup@yahoo.co.uk with your name, times that are good for you and any languages you speak.
