This image is of the old Dalston Theatre, sadly about to be lost to the hungry appetite of Hackney Council and their developers forever. BUT squatters who have been occupying the adjacent Georgian houses, also to be demolished, are bravely trying to save the buildings at the last minute, whist Bill Parry-Davies & Co from OPEN Dalston (www.opendalston.net) continue their amazing efforts against the council’s unpopular decision in the courts today. A single female is occupying the theatre roof, its freezing and dangerous. They need your support NOW!
The injunction Bill managed to secure against the illegal demolition of these beautiful and immensely cultural significant buildings has just run out, at 4pm today. Hackney will inevitably be sending the bulldozers in, together with strong arms to evict the protesters. Nobody wanted to lose these buildings, and their demise was planned by the council a long time ago, with the usual wilful damage so they would fall into disrepair and eventually it would be ‘necessary’ to demolish. I was present at the planning sub-committee as a member of the public. It was one of the most depressing meetings I have witnessed, with huge public protest being ignored as the council just pushed the demolition go-ahead through. Find out more at the OPEN Dalston blog. IN THE MEAN TIME…
PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT THE THEATRE AND ITS OCCUPANTS TODAY, THEY NEED YOUR HELP!!! AND IF YOU CAN BRING DOWN BLANKETS & HOT DRINKS FOR THE OCCUPANTS, BANNERS, ETC ETC EVEN BETTER! DALSTON HAS BEEN GOING TO THE DOGS, PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT! RECLAIM OUR COMMUNITIES AND CULTURAL LEGACIES BEFORE THEY ARE LOST FOREVER!!!! (it’s happening everywhere…time to pull together.)
DALSTON LANE, E8, JUST NEXT TO DALSTON JUNCTION AND OPPOSITE THE HACKNEY PEACE MURAL.
