Dalston Theatre occupation - Update Tuesday 21st.

maquinavaja | 21.02.2006 19:13 | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | London

Activists are still defending the occupation of the Dalston theatre and the two adjacent buildings from eviction.

The situation at the moment is confusing. Whilst the police have stated this morning that they have no orders to evict the buildings as they see this as a 'civil matter' between the occupiers, the contractors and Hackney council, workmen from Byline have effectivelly taken over the theatre itself, even though, 1 activist is still resisting at the roof. The others are maintaining the occupation of the building opposite, and intend to open it as soon as possible as a social centre.

The contractors from Byline (hired by Hackney Council) claim to be "doing work" preparing the theatre for a structural survey by English Heritage, although the the people maintaining the occupation argue that what they are actually doing is probably to prepare the building for demolition.

Although few people from the local Open Dalston campaign and others have gone today to the Theatre to show support, the activists maintain the call for more people to go down there to show solidarity with the occupation, and to resist any fruther attempts of eviction. The address is 4-14 Dalston Lane, London E8.
