Vigil and petition hand over - New inquiry into the death in custody of Douglas Scott

Petition coordinator, Alison Thorne said, "Change is urgently needed. Signature collectors report that public awareness about the systemic racism, which allows Indigenous deaths in custody to continue, is high. People understood that by supporting Letty Scott's campaign they were also supporting the Palm Island community, the Redfern community and every other community and family who have lost a loved one in custody."

Rest In Peace TJ

On the 2nd anniversary of the death of TJ Hickey, justice has still been denied. The Redfern community is standing strong though, determined not to be silenced, not to be screwed over by the system yet again.
 People gathered together today to remember TJ, and to protest against the system that murdered him.

It was a successful day. It started with a solemn remembrance of TJ, then a rally and march to Surry Hills police station. A loud and passionate confrontation with the police took place. The event unfortunately ended with police harassment before the community returned to the Block for a barbecue.

Auckland: Public Rally to stop low pay!

You are invited to attend a free Public Rally to Support Low Paid Workers (Featuring Imon Star from Rhombus, Olmecha, top NZ comedians, speakers and Rosita Vai from New Zealand Idol), 2pm – 4pm, Sunday 12 February, Auckland Town Hall, Queen Street.

The purpose of the meeting is to approve Unite’s bargaining strategy for all its members in 2006 and to get the whole community to support Unite’s SuperSizeMyPay.com campaign. The campaign’s three main claims are:

*A minimum wage set at $12 per hour (Even if workers are paid more than this, any success will help lift all wages)

*Abolish Youth Rates (Workers under 18 who do the same work as adults should get paid the same pay)

*Secure hours of work (Many workers never know how many hours they will get each week)
