Council purchase of Jericho Boatyard?

Oxford Green Group has put forward a proposal for the City Council to purchase Jericho Boatyard, to safeguard it as an operating boating facility.

Oxford City Council Green Group has put forward a proposal to
the budget-setting meeting on Monday 20th February (5 pm) that
the City Council set aside money to purchase the land that includes the Jericho Boatyard, currently owned by British Waterways.

The boatyard is currently being squatted by members of the boating community who are trying to defend facilities for boaters - British Waterways has given them until February 28th to leave or be evicted. The purchase of the land would allow the City Council to work with the boating community on a positive housing scheme that would safeguard community and boating facilities on site.

The proposal probably does not have enough support among councillors to pass at this moment. If you support the idea of the land being purchased for the public good (and you live in Oxford), please visit www.faxyourmp.com and send a message to your district councillor telling them so - preferably before Monday afternoon!

If your councillor is a Green, then they already support the proposal.

Cheers,

Matt
