STOP ALCOA DESTROYING PRISTINE ICELAND!!!

Isabella | 16.02.2006 18:41 | Ecology | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

Arms manufacturer and aluminium giant ALCOA have said they will announce on 1 March if they will press for yet another aluminium smelter in the north of Iceland, probably near the town of Husavik.

THIS MUST NEVER HAPPEN!

ALCOA have already got the incarnation of corporate evil, Bechtel, building a 320.000 tn smelter in the east of Iceland. The project entails devastating the highlands near Karahnjukar, the last great pristine wilderness of Europe, to dam two major glacial rivers for bogus "green" energy to drive the smelter in Reydarfjordur.

Iceland is the only country in Europe which has relatively escaped the destruction of heavy industry, pollution and deadly infrastructure that other countries have been wrecked with.

The National Power Company plans to begin filling the dams at Karahnjukar in September this year. This apocalypse of rare and endangered animal life, volcanic landscape and sub-arctic vegetation must NEVER be allowed to become reality!

The Icelandic opposition to this corporate take over of their country desperately need help from the international community.

An international protest camp has been called for this summer by Friends of Iceland and Saving Iceland. The camp will be near Karahnjukar, just like last years protest camp. It starts 21 July and will be host to lots of activism, cultural/artistic events and concerts by both world famous and not so famous bands.

THE ICELANDIC DRAGON OF FLOWERS AND ICE MUST BE SAVED!

Lets all fly there and stop this now!

You can count on our solidarity.

I propose thousands of re-activists book long-haul flights (preferably those heavily subsidized cheap ones) and swarm en-masse to beautiful Iceland clogging up the air and depleting the ozone as they they soar across the sky.

Actually mate, it cost 60 quid on the ferry last summer.

Just pick holes from your armchair why don't you. The world's safe in your hands.

Husavik and bay in the North of Iceland
Husavik and bay in the North of Iceland

Husavik's the second biggest town in North Iceland, meaning it has a population of around 4,000. Formerly the centre of the whaling industry, in recent years it has successfully shifted it's economy to whale-watching, rather than hunting. If you're lucky you can see whales from the shore.

At least half a year behind. According to the contract the National Power Company are to deliver the energy to ALCOA 1 April 2007. If not it is stipulated that the Icelandic taxpayer pays penalties to ALCOA. In the current feeding frenzy of multinational aluminium companies in Iceland genocidal Rio Tinto, Russal and Billinton were actualy lining up for the smelter in the north. Now the Icelandic government is trying to sweeten ALCOA by offering them the option to jump the line for Husavik.

Do you live near an ALCOA facilty? Why not give them a surprise visit? See 'The Nature Killers' www.savingiceland.org for ALCOA addresses in the UK and Ireland.

The opposition against the aluminium industry in Iceland is mounting. Next summer will be the last chance to stop the Kárahnjúkar dams for good and save Europe's last great wildernessess.

Lets hit ALCOA so it hurts before 1 March, and for that matter, ever after.

You must have had a really good deal last summer then, Crap! Seems that the births are quite expensive this year.

Unless the fares were cheaper from Cloud Cuckoo Land?

On the other hand flights remain very cheap. So I think we both know how the vast majority of reactionaries will be choose to travel. I just hope they win for themselves the vainglorious Pyrrhic victory they deserve!

The majority of the courageous people who came to Iceland to protest aginst the destruction of the last great wilderness of Europe came by boat.

The July offer of Smyrrill line was £50 and no bitter shithead will be able to change that, ever!
