Just a few facts regarding animal-based research:
Around fifty million animals worldwide are used for research each year.
Although not perfect, animals are the closest we can get to a human physiology without using actual humans.
Many animals, such as rats, have a much shorter life than humans, meaning that they can be studied for multiple generations after having been subjected to a procedure or chemical.
There have been many human deaths and injuries as a result of inadequate animal testing.
Using animals in research gives us a level of control over variables that we could never have with humans.
For every drug made today, 5,000 other chemicals will have been tried, only 5 of which will be deemed safe for human testing.
The following is a list of just a few of the procedures and drugs made possible by animal research:
Vaccines:
Anthrax
Chicken Pox
Cholera
Influenza
Hepatitis A and B
Measles
Mumps
Polio
Rabies
Rubella
Smallpox
Tetanus
Whooping Cough
Yellow Fever
Medications:
Insulin
Penicillin
Streptomycin
Anti-inflammatory drugs
Various painkillers
Chemotherapy
Devices
Pacemakers
Artificial Hearts/valves
Artificial Hips
Artificial Knees
Transplants:
Heart
Kidney
Liver
