Aldermaston: 8 arrests, successful blockade

jk | 30.01.2006 12:52

This morning, at around 6.30am, groups of blockaders successfully shut two gates at Britain's nuclear weapons factory. There were eight arrests. Cutting teams gave up on trying to get through the lock-ons!

Some realism in reporting please

A classic IM report, everything was positive, everybody was inspired, we achieved all our aims, the public were supportive etc etc. The only problem is this wasn't the case and IM was in part to blame because the police / security people knew exactly what was going to happen well in advance and were fully prepared.

In the report the phrase is used "groups of blockaders successfully shut two gates". Sounds good, sounds positive doesn't it ? Except what is doesn't say is we achieved this for exactly six minutes and all those working at Aldermaston on that day had received instructions to use other gates meaning the total effect was... nil.

People need to understand the staff at Aldermaston have over 50 years of experience in dealing with protest. Posting full detauls on IM is hardly helpful

How dare you Sir !

How dare LJK Setright post the truth about an action on to the newswire. The IMC moderators were quite right to hide this comment.

Furthermore why was this story somehow linked to Israel - an opportunity missed there !

Activists on the blockade were heartened by the support of the Thames Valley Police who were able to mobilize approximately 80 of their finest officers towards ensuring that the blockade was a great success.

Predictably BBC Berks accused the activists of being protesters with the following coverage:

“Seven people have been charged with obstructing the highway after a protest outside the headquarters of Britain's nuclear weapons programme.
About 60 people protested at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), Berkshire, in an attempt to delay building work on a new £100m laser laboratory.
Project Orion will house a powerful laser that replicates the physical conditions of a nuclear reaction.
The seven were bailed to return before Newbury magistrates on 9 February.
They are: Zina Zelter, 32, of Bartholomew Street, Leicestershire; Emma Bateman, 38, of Blaby South, Wigston, Leicestershire; Pat Arrowsmith, 76, of Middle Lane, London; Marlene Yeo, 74, of Burton-on-the Wolds, Leicestershire; Neelem Gupta, 25, of Balmore Road, London; Irene Willis, 60, of Canvey Island, Essex; Robert Nicholls, 33, of Lynthorpe Road, Stamford Hill, London.
A 26-year-old man was cautioned.
The building works at AWE are the first stage of a three-year £1bn redevelopment of the site.
The upgrade was approved by a West Berkshire Council planning committee last week.”

aggressive police tactics

What is not reported here is that the police used"pressure points" to remove non-locked on passive protesters and then dragged off rhose in lock-ons without removing the lock-ons first!
