ALDERMASTON BLOCKADE 30TH JANUARY 2006
Giulia | 10.01.2006 10:00 | Anti-militarism
On 23rd November 2005 West Berkshire Planning Committee voted to defer a decision on whether to support the Atomic Weapons Establishment's full planning notice for the controversial Orion laser facility . If built, the laser will enable the UK government to test and build the next generation of nuclear weapons.
On Wednesday 25th January 2006 WBPC will meet again to vote on this matter. If the Committee approves the application for the laser on 25th January, the direct action-campaign Block The Builders will carry out a publicly announced blockade on the following Monday, 30 January 2006.
We will let all pledgers know by e-mail the result of the meeting and confirmation or not of the blockade soon after the meeting. If you are not a pledger, this information will also be posted on the front page of the BtB website ( http://www.blockthebuilders.org.uk/index.php). And for those of you who want to be there to find out for yourselves, and support the opposition to the laser, the planning meeting will take place at 6.00 pm on 25 January at the Calcott Centre, Centre, Highview (off Royal Avenue) in Calcott, Reading RG314XD. How to get there, click here: * http://tinyurl.com/8d763.
It is possible that delaying tactics, legal submissions and other things MAY defer the decision yet again, but we want to be ready in case the committee approve the laser plans.
Please put this date in your diary now and encourage others to join us - you don't have to be a pledger to take part in the blockade. This may be the big one, and if so we need to be big too!
See http://www.blockthebuilders.org.uk for confirmation of the blockade. Info will be posted by 26 Jan.

Wendy had other ideas...
Momentum for Monday is building - for the past couple of days lots of people have been getting in touch (blockaders, mainstream national, local and alt media, supporters etc).
Today the press office of Caroline Lucas MEP (Green) put out a press release supporting the blockade, in which she said she hoped the blockade would succeed.
“These plans have already ridden roughshod over local democracy - and if construction goes ahead the new Orion laser facility will threaten international law and world peace [...] I have called on the Government to launch an immediate public inquiry into the plans, to hear the high number of public objections as well as legal and political arguments against the development."
“Until it does however we have no choice but to physically block the builders - although I am unable to join them on Monday, I wish everyone there every success and I hope they are able to raise the public profile of the issue, prompt a public inquiry, and prevent the construction..."
In the past 24 hours national CND also put out a press release explicitly supporting the blockade. Chair, Kate Hudson, said "We must do everything we can to show the government that the people of Britain do not support their plans to waste more taxpayers’ money on a dangerous and illegal nuclear weapons programme".
All to the good. But... we need more bodies.
We want your body.
Yes, we want to make this a truly mass affair and for two reasons;
1. Any day that we actively and directly disrupt the workings of a WMD factory is a cause for celebration
2. We want to send a political message to the MoD, to AWE, to the wavering politicians (whatever we might think about parliamentary democracy, they might just have an opportunity to influence the direction of the Trident Replacement debate), to people "out there" - that there is serious and determined mass resistance to the idea of Britain upgrading/extending/ developing new ... Weapons of Mass Destruction.
So, if you are checking out this thread and humm-ing and haa-ing ("oh, i heard it was going to rain/snow/be cold/" or "I don't know if there'll be any support (legal/tea/transportation"), the thing is, we can't predict the weather, but... we can tell you that logistically this will be a well-supported action. There is a legal support team, there is some food/hot drinks etc for people who have practicially frozen to death from lying on the ground too long, you will be rescued from the copshop after release and .. maybe... you will get some court support afterwards too (we will do our best).
So there we go. Call in sick on Monday!
Don't sit on the fence (hop over it!)
Wendy
