Raising awareness of the cost of flying

Early January is the time when many people go to book their holiday packages abroad. So some Notts people went to make sure they knew of the environmental costs. Nottingham campaigners braved a cold and wet city centre this Saturday afternoon to distribute information about the contribution of air travel to climate chaos. Banners and flags were raised outside Thompsons travel agents and leaflets were distributed to passers by and people going in to book their holidays.

Nottingham campaigners braved a cold and wet city centre this Saturday afternoon to distribute information about the contribution of air travel to climate chaos. Banners and flags were raised outside Thompsons travel agents and leaflets were distributed to passers by and people going in to book their holidays.

Within moments of arriving the Thompsons manager came out to inform us that we were not allowed to protest outside their shop and should move some 100 metres along the shopping area and set up outside the church. We explained that as far as we knew the local church were not selling air flights today and therefore we would have to decline her offer of the alternative venue. She left saying that she would therefore contact the local council to have us removed. In the course of our time there a couple of council wardens in their snazzy, macho, pseudo-police uniforms did stroll past but did not approach us. If Nottingham’s new anti-leafleting regulations are in force, we were not challenged while giving out our leaflets.

Two media students from Trent Uni had read about the planned action via Notts Indymedia and came along to make a video news story. Hopefully they will publish the result here soon.

The information on the leaflets can be seen at: -
