Plane Stupid Campaign building up steam

EF!er | 03.01.2006 10:59 | Ecology | Globalisation | London

The campaign to stop the third runway at Heathrow is building up steam, attracting lots of national press coverage. This follows the pie-ing of Alistair Darling, the disruption of the aviation conference and the demo on Towerbridge that meant the aviation bosses required a police escort.

The front page of the Observer led with the campaign:

And the Independent also did a piece:

The problem with the "plane stupid" campaign is that it hasn't learnt from the debacle that was the objection to the new runway at Manchester. There is little sense is simply saying no new runway without offering an alternative if you expect to get wider public support.

People want low cost air travel and telling them they can't have it is unlikely to get much of a response

NIMBY

I'm all in favour of this protest providing I can have guarantees about the following vital times I will require low cost air travel:

i) This Januarys ski-ing trip to Daddy's place in Zermat
ii) Giles' stag do in Prague in July
iii) Summer hols flight to Phuket
iv) The rugby tour to South Africa in November

Aside from this - to the baracades my brothers !
