I've just learned through wikipedia that pioneering experimental musician and free improvising guitarist Derek Bailey passed away at his Spanish home during Xmas day. There doesn't seem to be anything about this on the mainstream media sites as yet but a number of Blogs are carrying the news.

Wikipedia article on Bailey:

He was a great and a true original. What a rotten Xmas.

My memory is playing tricks- this photo was actually taken at the old Vortex Club in Stoke Newington, not in Hackney as stated.

And your point, grate?

Indymedia is about 'our' news- Bailey was an important figure in 'our' music, that is, not necessarily music you or I might 'like', but non-corporate, radical music that pushed the boundaries and made the world a more interesting, richer place. He was a musical pioneer and greatly influential in musical fields that, whilst little reported, are about integrity rather than Bono & Geldof style posturing. His passing is noteworthy and newsworthy, and I think its only fitting that a source such as indymedia should report it ahead of the corporate press, who will no doubt eventually catch up and I'm sure a Grauniard obit will be forthcoming. 'Our' obits have some meaning and resonance however.

Which is not to demean the death of of your 'mates gran' of course.
