freedom of speech on indymedia?

posts getting removed- WHY? | 13.12.2005 20:38 | Culture | Indymedia | Repression | World

if you are the volunteer reading this with the power to remove it (like many posts have) please do not remove this if you want people to believe your site.

I can understand some posts need to be removed to avoid certain situations etc.
But it appears some posts are being removed for no particular reason.

Perhaps people should look at-

www.indymedia.org.uk/en/viewallposts.html

instead of your front page and decide what they want to read/ not read.

"Freedom" of information is what you are saying you so love, so have the balls to allow it.

Again, Volunteers of Indymedia if you think this post should be removed, and do remove it, please give a reason via another post clarifying this situation.
On your "hidden" page above you should at least have a short reason i.e. what clause of the editorial bit is breached.

This site is about events and debate or am i wrong?
how can we trust it if there is censorship or "hiding" of certain posts?
A debate on this is needed for your own sake.

"for no reason"?

"I can understand some posts need to be removed to avoid certain situations etc.

No post is being removed for 'no particular reason'

And this is the second thread today - did you not notice the other one?

The editorial guidelines ( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/static/editorial.html) state:

"Concerns about editorial guidelines or queries about moderation are dealt with on the imc-uk-features list. These issues are not dealt with through the newswire, and newswire posts on these topics will be hidden."

So, why not contact the list if you have a query? If you subscribe to it, you will receive all the mails that explain why posts have been hidden. If you don't agree with a decision, you can challenge it.

"Perhaps people should look at-

www.indymedia.org.uk/en/viewallposts.html

instead of your front page and decide what they want to read/ not read."

The link is there to enable people to make that choice.

""Freedom" of information is what you are saying you so love, so have the balls to allow it."

Should the female volunteers have balls as well. And where do you see this statement about freedom of information?

Sexist, racist and discriminatory posts are hidden as a matter of course. Do you really think that Indymedia's core values are about promoting such views?

"Again, Volunteers of Indymedia if you think this post should be removed, and do remove it, please give a reason via another post clarifying this situation.
On your "hidden" page above you should at least have a short reason i.e. what clause of the editorial bit is breached."

We aren't paid to do this - and we do notify the list already. Perhaps you have some coding skills so that a reason can be given automatically? Otherwise it involves sending an email and making a post.

This post will be hidden at some point as per the guidelines.

Here's what you're missing...

13.12.2005 21:39

Funny, I don't feel like I'm missing out on much when I look at the Hidden Posts. The most recent ones are:
- someone posting a request about a story he vaguely remembers seeing a couple of weeks ago (Non-news, use a search engine);
- unsourced drivel about Indymedia being a Rightist funded conspiracy to harvest IP addresses (pretty likely Inaccurate) with slander about an un-named volunteer thrown in (Disruptive).
- a repost of a Mormon professor's musings on 9/11 (Repost)

How many times does it have to be said? This site is for NEWS and the Editorial Guidelines are open to all. Hiding is Not Censorship, stop whining.

I've never seen a good, factual news story removed or hidden from Indymedia. I've seen examples of guideline applications that have caused complaints (from the poster) but all of those deserved to be hidden for one or more of the reasons in the Guidelines. The policy is open and available to be checked. I've done so and if other people want to, they can. Meanwhile, leave the front page as uncluttered as possible, please!
