The film 'The Revolution will not be Televised' will be showing on Tuesday at 7.00pm at the Midlands Arts Centre. It is about the failed coup in Venezuela in 2002 with apparent US support.
Here is the summary:-
74mins
With Hugo Chavez, Pedro Carmona, Jesse Helms & Colin Powell
Was the United States a shadowy presence in the background of the aborted coup in Venezuela in 2002? Irish filmmakers, Bartley and O'Briain, were inside the palace making a routine documentary on Chavez when his democratically elected government was briefly overthrown by a cabal of rich businessmen and Army officers. Having promised to redistribute the nation's significant wealth - Venezuela is the world's fourth largest exporter of oil - Chavez’ govt. had made powerful enemies.
The multi-award winning film, a compelling and unique fly on the wall documentary of the 48 hour coup, uses television news clips from the privately owned, oil-oligarchy-backed Venezuelan media, whose attacks on Chavez - comparing him to Castro and accusing him of mental instability - are a textbook in media manipulation.
This special screening will be followed by a discussion about Venezuela today featuring Andy Goodall from the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign, who recently visited the country.
