video codecs

I downloaded this video, but I can't watch it, because it's encoded with the new Windows Media 3 codec. I use linux, and apparently there's no open source decoder for this type of video, so mac & linux users are left in the dark. (although if you're have a mac you may be able to play it if you download windows media player)

apparently the older Windows Media 1 and 2 codecs play fine in, for example, VLC, as will things like mpeg4 / divx etc.

I know video codecs are a big mess, and its diffcult choosing which one to use.

Anyway, good luck stopping the bypass.
