Guido | 05.12.2005 16:09 | Ecology | London

Saturday saw the biggest ever demo over climate change in Britain. Between 5 and 10 thousand marched from Lincolns Inn Fields to the US Embassy.

Pictures and report below.

OK it may have been the biggest demo to date but it was also the most boring. The rally was particularly bad. After a promising start by American folk singer David Rovics (doing his song about New Orleans)there then followed nearly two hours of insomnia cureing speeches.

Worst of all (and the competition was harsh) was New Labour tosser Micheal Meacher. His opening remark was to say that as Britain had helped the US in Iraq we were now in a strong bargaining position over climate change????? Nice Micheal that seems like a great strategy (not!). So if we want to reach international agreement on CO2 emissions the best way to do it is help George Bush murder 100,000 innocent Muslims?? No doubt Mr Meacher thinks that being lied to by Tony Blair is some kind of get out clause for voting in favour of the war? Lets get this straight: If you voted for mass murder in Iraq then you are scum and NOTHING excuses you and your actions.

The final speech at the end of the rally by George Monbiot was by far the best. He spelt out in plain English what lies in store for us if we dont address the issue of Global Warming. Not comfortable listening but the truth never is.

"The final speech at the end of the rally by George Monbiot was by far the best."

If the best speech was by by George Monbiot, I can see how bad they must have been.

Some really stupid slogans

Slogans such as 'see teh light George Bush' etc just go to show the conformist nature of a large part of the demonstrators. Its like a movement which doesnt see the big picture. Bush, Clinton before that, Bush before that every US president, UK prime minister, French President, Greek Prime minister Italian Prime minister etc to date has worked for one part of the population and thats the elite/monopolies/big business/imperialists/whatever you want to call them. This is how the system works. If people want to think that Bush is to blame or Blair wants to persuade Bush to make things better and all that shit then we can kiss this world goodbye now coz this movement is a joke and exactly what people like Bush and Blair want. Its the equivelant of Live 8 is for poverty.
