Thousands march in London Climate demonstration.

Thousands marched today as London's contribution to the International Day of Climate Protest.

A wholly peaceful demonstration wound its way from Lincoln's Inn Fields, via Thames Embankment, Parliament Square (where there was a brief sit down) and Downing Street to - astonishingly - the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square.

As darkness fell speeches were heard from ex-Environment Minister Michael Meacher, Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas and long time environment campaigner George Monbiot.

Powerful points of view also came from speakers from Rising Tide and Globalise Resistance. Whilst Friends of the Earth applauded Kyoto, most others regarding it as either meaningless greenwash or as the absolute minimum starting point.

Common themes were that absolute limits needed to be set on CO2 production, personal consumption has to be reduced, and that more fossil fuels need to be left in the earth. Warnings came that Blair was about to abandon Britain's so-called stance on global warming, and throw his lot in once more with his chums in Washington.

And few speakers, being less than a hundred yards from the US embassy, were able to hide their contempt for the Bush regime, his neocon administration and his oil barons that prop it up.

It's claimed that this was the biggest UK demonstration on Climate Change yet. Several speakers predicted that today will be seen in history as the turning point in the campaign.

Few speakers...were unable to hide their contempt - ?? Does this mean most were able to hide it pretty easily?
