As the author of the original screensaver I can assure you that it uses OpenGL technology but only works upon the Mac OS X platform.
It is virus free, although I'm not at all sure if IndyMedia actually runs a virus check on files uploaded or linked to from IndyMedia's site.
Like all items published upon or linked for download via IndyMedia and in support of IndyMedia the item is published as OpenSource / GPL / Creative Commons - that is something all authors to the site have to agree to and I didn't see why I should be any different in that respect!
The file can be edited by anyone who has an installation of Quartz Composer or some other application that can read and work upon .qtz files.
So rest assured - and no need to be 'wary' - ha ha :-)
