Protesters pressure Environment Agency to take action on incinerator

Forward NAIL | 22.11.2005 19:45 | Ecology | Health

Incinerators make me sick!

At 8am this morning 30 campaigners from NAIL protested outside the Environment Agencies offices on Scarrington Road, off Ladybay Bridge. We greeted the employees of the EA as they arrived for work, we handed them flyers, waved banners and placards and delivered them a letter.

We are demanding action to be taken over the highly polluting, emission breaching, cancer causing incinerator, which has had 27 known pollution breaches over the past 4 years.

The Environment Agency, the regulators of the industry are failing in their duty to protect the residents of Nottingham from Eastcroft. We demand that they issue an enforcement notice to ensure that Eastcroft fully complies with its IPC licence all of the time and if it cannot, the EA takes the appropriate steps to close it down! The EA invited is in to discuses our position, after an hour long meeting we agreed
to disagree. The EA claim that they responded to each breach in the appropriate manner and that Eastcroft generally performs well.

Eastcroft's Record - The Facts Speak for Themselves

2002 12 self-reported pollution breaches - The EA took NO action

2003 4 self-reported pollution breaches - The EA took NO action

2004 7 self-reported pollution breaches - The EA took NO action

2005 4 self-reported breaches - The EA took NO action

Despite the fact that Eastcroft emits a cocktail of hundreds of toxic poisons, the EA specifies that only a handful are constantly monitored. Yet the most toxic and cancer causing poisons are measured only twice a year and independently checked by the EA once a year!

In March 2005, dioxins released into the atmosphere for the residents of Nottingham to consume, were found to be 900% of their allowable level, this could have gone undetected for several months. What action did the EA take with this major breach of the most cancerous substance known to science? They wrote a letter to Waste Recycling Group, telling them off! NO enforcement notice was issued, NO restrictions, NO prosecution, WRG continue to operate, pollute and profit.

Complaints to the EA

Why is it that when we talk to residents and business around the incinerator, they complain about dust on their cars and windows, the acrid smells, the plumes of smoke that often belch out of the chimney late at night.

When we talk to the EA, they say they know nothing about this, we have not received a complain they say?

So please, whenever you get an abnormal amounts of dust on your car or your windows, when you see dark smoke or are awoken in the night choking, please report this to the EA as they request. If they have the complaints, they will have to investigate and act. Please also let us know, we will log your report and follow it up.

Please report the incident, stating the location, time and date to;

Eastcroft Incinerator

With people power we can stop these mad proposals to incinerate waste, which could otherwise be recycled, to poison Nottingham's air with arsnic, cadmium, murcury, lead, PCB's and the most cancerouse substances known to science dioxins.

We must stop Waster Recycling Group buld a third incineraor in Nottingham. They are not content with burning Notingham's waste, they now want to import it from throught the Eas Mdlands to further pollute our air with toxic posions.

SAY NO MORE.
