Trashed towns and corrupt councils

Keith Parkins | 15.11.2005 16:44 | Analysis | Repression | Social Struggles

That a bunch of councillors against the wishes of the local community should choose to trash the historic heart of Bury St Edmunds comes as no surprise. It is happening in other towns too.

Farnborough cannot lay claim to an historic heart, it is being trashed all the same. It is being trashed for a superstore that no one wants. No one that is apart from the corrupt councillors who the developers have in their pockets. Social housing tenants are to be kicked out of their homes so as a car park can be built on the site of their demolished homes to service the unwanted superstore. Objectors who dare criticise the corporate bully boys and the corrupt councillors they have in their pockets, are threatened with Asbos.

Three councillors recently found guilty for a conflict of interest are still in office, one is now the deputy mayor.

The century old Queens Market at Upton Park in East London is faced with destruction so the site can be regenerated as an Asda superstore. The local people do not want to lose their market. Who cares when the Mayor is in the pocket of the developers?

St Modwen is the developer behind the destruction of Farnborough town centre, Queens Market and many other bad schemes across the country.

In Camberley, an unwanted shopping mall is planned with 220 flats in seven storey blocks that are financing the scheme. The planning department is riddled with corruption. Two planners have been forced out with 'redundancy packages' to keep their mouths shut. Others have been shunted on to other unsuspecting local authorities. The developer, Crest Nicholson plc, the same developer who has kicked a family out of their house boat home, once moored on a marina in Penarth Marina, Cardiff Bay.

We know the problem, these are but a few illustrative examples. The question is: what the hell do we do about it?

How do we fix these corporate bullies and the corrupt councillors who jump to their tune?

Trashing for trashings sake!

Well it certainly makes a refreshing change to see local authorities "trash the local towns"...

I seem to remember the fruitcakes trashing my hometown of Stirling all those months ago!

It's happening through out Europe

It's happening right through europe, the dutch seem to be the best at Urban Planning and development.
The french and germans are not far behind and italians are doing it their way.
From Florence to Milano via Bologna they are building a high speed rail link (TAV) cutting straight through the mountains north of Florence, the area has been declared a disaster zone.
Another high speed rail link from Milano to Torino has turned that route into a building site.
Then there is the Turin / Lyon which locals in and aroound the Susa valley claim is not needed as the existed route is not used to it's full capacity. On the french side of the alps the locals are pissed off with the constant stream of HGV trucks which makes their lives hell with the noise and pollution and danger.
You can drive through france or germany on your way back to the UK and you have to be blind not to notice the amount of new buildings going up. New roads and traffic systems.
As soon as you cross the channel it's the same story.
Your local councillers are noo different from from their colleagues through out europe they are all on the take from people who are determinded toconcrete over the whole planet.
