Friday 11th 5pm The Common Place. A talk about resistance to the High-Speed Train in Valsusa in the Italian Alps.

A visiting speaker from Valsusa, Italy, is giving a talk on Friday 5pm at the Common Place. He will be talking about the high-speed train that is being built through his valley, the Lyon to Turin link of the European network. There has been a long history of resistance to this railway, both locally and thoughout Italy, focussing on the ecological damage, corporate corruption and the ever-expanding arteries for transferrance of capital. The corporate pressure has been especially high with contracts for the upcoming Winter Olympics Games in the same valley. Prospection work in Valsusa started on 31st October and further resistance will be crucial to sabotaging this project.

Is that the Italian Alps, or the rather more disputed South Tyrolean Alps?

I have to admit, my geography is more crap than my history...
