Israeli Sonic Booms Over Gaza

Worried | 03.11.2005 11:50 | Anti-militarism | Repression

Although it had evacuated its settlers and troops from the Gaza Strip earlier this year, Israel continues to control the territory's airspace, coastline and borders. It has also continued to carry out air raids against what it says are militant targets. What's more, Israeli jets are are now said to be flying regularly over the Palestinian land, with sonic booms designed to be a show of force.

Doctors' groups have filed a petition at the Israeli Supreme Court seeking to halt air force jets from breaking the sound barrier over the Gaza Strip. The UN says the tactic is an abuse of human rights, causing widespread fear especially among children, and medics say it induces miscarriages.

Having lived in Haifa, I can assure you that the sonic booms also happen regularly over Israel as well as over the disputed territories.

The sonic booms sound like a loud firework and are no more scary than the lead up to bomfire night.

Israel needs an airforce as countries like Iran would otherwise make good their threat to wipe Israel off the face of earth, together with another six million jews.

Apology

Ok, Israel needs an airforce? Does it need to constantly break the sound barrier at low altitudes over civilian areas? According to an IDF spokesperson this happens regularly and is a "collective punishment" for attacks on Israel. I dont think they'd waste their time causing this phenomenon if it were only as loud as a firework. Add to this the fact that the Israeli air force had to apologise when a 'sonic boom' was created unintentionally over an Israeli town. They're scary as fuck and they breach international human rights law, but when has that stopped Israel before?

"the disputed territories"

03.11.2005 18:03

Sonic's "disputed territories" aren't actually disputed. International law and the international community, including London and Washington, all agree the territories are illegally occupied by the racist state of Israel.

Apologists for Israeli state terror sure like to debase the English language, to support their darling war criminal Sharon.

A massive concrete wall - a "fence".

Execution without charge or trial - "targetted killings"

Collective punishment - "anti-terror operations"

Goebell's would be impressed.

You're so funny

You are all so funny! I'm ROFL! Poor diddums Palestinians don't like sonic booms. Would they like real booms instead? The sonic booms cause widespread panic? Well, their bombs cause widespread panic to Israeli civilians. Ah, sorry, Israeli civilians have no human rights. Sorry, forgot where I was posting...

"Boycott Israeli Goods" accuses "Sonic the Hedgehog" of twisting the English language. Its only you, "Boycott", that is doing that. The phrase "disputed territories" is absolutely legitimate and correct. The territories are disputed in case you hadn't noticed. The PA claims all of them, Israel wants to keep a few percent for herself in a final deal, rather than have to expel 100,000s of Jews from their ancient lands. Hence the phrase. And its more correct than "occupied territories", seeing how the PA has control over most of them, and the vast majority of Palestinians were under PA control in the 1990s. As far as legality goes, the territories belonged to Egypt and Jordan when Israel acquired them in 67. Neither state claims those territories anymore.

Its wrong to call a fence a fence? How much of it, do you know, is actually a concrete wall? Its something like 2 or 3% of the fence. The rest is just barbed wire fencing, like existing in the Sinai before the treaty with Egypt. And arresting terrorists is not collective punishment. And assasinating terrorists who are launching attacks is not executive without trial or charge, no more than killing Nazis was in the Second World War. They're combatants, in case you hadn't noticed.

does anything ever change?

A carefully calculated act of pure unvarnished evil, and look at how all the supporters of Israel have come out to cheer.

Is there a more sickening sight than wicked humans wallowing in their ability to carry out the worst of crimes without fear of punishment?

Mind you, I'm surprised that Indymedia hasn't hidden the article, like it did with the one detailing the Israeli produced and shown documentary that gave eye-witness testimony to the horrific abuse of "black" jewish children in Israel, when the Israeli government accepted vast payment from the US to experiment, mengele-style, on these kids by zapping unbelievable levels of gamma-radiation into their brains.

Of course, factual accounts of the Israeli government abusing their own citizens under the same principles of race that the Nazis used, must be suppressed at all costs. Heaven help the Israeli citizen who discovers exactly how evil their government is, and tries to alert the world. Amazing how quickly they discover just how reluctant so-called alternate media outlets become in carrying their stories.

"A massive concrete wall - a "fence". "

Yes it is a fence - 3% is a wall in the area where Hamas snipers were firing at cars and killed 10 month old baby Shalhevet Pass on 26 March 2001 in the arms of her father. The rest is a fence and has dramatically cut down the number of suicide bombings.

"Execution without charge or trial - "targetted killings" " Yes they are targetted against scum like Abdel Aziz Rantisisi who was responsible for hundreds of deaths of men, women and children.

"Collective punishment - "anti-terror operations" " No they are anti terror ops aimed at stopping attacks on civilians.
If this was America who was suffereing from the terrorsist attrocities Israel has faced, Jenin, a hotbed of terrorism, would now be horizontal. When Israel went into Jenin, ground troops were sent in rather than simply bombing the area; the reason for this was to reduce civilian casualties.
Despite claims of a massacre, even the Guardian accepted in the end that there was no massacre; rather just over 50 leading terrorist, most of them armed, were killed. Israel lost 27 soldiers in this operation - the reason that these men died was because Israel wished to minimise Palestinian civilian casualties.

"Boycott Israeli Goods " - sounds very similar to something the Nazis would say - Goebell's would be impressed.

Now Twilight - I have explained before that the supposed evidence you have for Israel carrying out experiments is flawed. The man who wrote it is a Holocaust denier; he has yet to substantiate a single article he has written.
Now I am unsure if you are a genuine idiot or just a very confused young boy, but please understand that Jewish people are not monsters. We no dont have horns, sacrifice children or want to take over the world.

..."Israel wants to keep a few percent for herself"...

04.11.2005 10:09

... ahhh ....

... ain't israel cute?

No.

Yet again we see the abandonment of civil society and international law at the drop of a hat if it suits the zionist agenda.

Some may be to stupid, to venal, to bloody self obsessed to see that the concept of 'dispute' in international law is null and void.

The land of Palestine has been legally identified by the international community and aportioned accordingly.

israel may dispute this - no one else does. Yet another case of zionist law placing itself above and beyond every other law.

Yet again the issue at hand is abandoned in favour of a thinnly disguised declamation that zionists are allowed -required even - to do only that which benefits them and sod everyone else.

Imagine living in the largest prison camp in the world, recently vacated. Imagine that you have no control over the food & water that is allowed in. Imagine if your travel and telecomunications are controled by those sworn to destroy your struggling civil society.

Now imagine that with 108db breaking directly over your head at 250 -500 feet at all hours of the day and night?

Intimidation, bent on the continuation of the policy of enforced exile (quite singularly in breech of numerous international laws and treaties).

And then peole, like J&P, claim that it is good and proper and in keeping with some divine plan (only for the choosen though).

He is proud to feign representation of the whole of the earths jews, even though the majority of them despise the agenda he has allied himself to.

But mere words here will not move him, not when the great phantasmorgorical sky ghost has approved his stand ... back down here on dark earth, we resist.

You say: "According to an IDF spokesperson this happens regularly and is a "collective punishment" for attacks on Israel"

I'm sorry, do you have a credible source for this?

I lived in Jerusalem for six months on student exchange and heard sonic booms all the time. They were not scary, nor were they especially loud. Was that also "collective punishment"? Or are you just making up lies to support your twisted agenda.

Israel wouldn't need a defence force if the Arabs stopped trying to destroy it.

Boom

Explosive laden Palestinian brainwashed teenagers make a much louder boom, and cause many more dead babies then this, yet I don't hear you protesting about that. Funny huh?

Trev

.. a few facts ...

04.11.2005 14:22

... and I know that facts aren't as welcome as they should be by zionists ...

1. The sonic booms you 'hear' in israel come from aircraft flying several thousand feet above and produce less than 100Db (loud, but not physiologically shocking). Those produced very low over Gaza recently (less than 500 feet) produce noise in the range of 110 - 140Db, which is the range when physiologically effects can be produced (including seering pain in sensitive - young - ears).

This amounts to collective punishment, quite apart from the sleep disturbance and deprevation it produces.

Collective punishment is illegal under international law and constitues a war crime in the same specific and particular sense that the numerburg trials exposed and acted upon.

It is also extremly sick and the product of deranged racist supremacist criminals.

2. If you want to talk dead babies in relation to the israel/Palestine issue, then the sheer numbers of dead babies israel has produced - from directly killing them with rockets, bombs, shells, bullets etc, to destroying and prohibiting through travel and entry restrictions, the medical and social support mechanisms still functioning under extreme duress - far outways those caught up or directly targeted by idiot fanatics from the otherside.

We won't even mention the 'incidents' of mass 'ringworm treatment' given (often fatally) to israeli[sic] children from the wrong sort of jewish background!

Now, baseless accusations and insults this way please ...

Bang! Bang! You're Deaf!

05.11.2005 10:14

One night last week in Israel thousands of panic-stricken citizens leapt from their beds, so alarmed by a noise which shook the skies "like heavy bombardment" that the Tel Aviv and central district police switchboards crashed, overloaded by worried callers.

The military had to apologize for disturbing the sleep of Israeli citizens. The sound had not been intended for their ears. It had somehow escaped from a series of confined sonic booms being inflicted on Palestinian citizens in the Gaza Strip hundreds of kilometers away. So if they thought the bang was loud in Tel Aviv, you can imagine the sound in Gaza, where shockwaves have also cracked walls and smashed thousands of windows.

In Israel they heard but one bang, muffled in comparison to the dozens of earsplitting"sound bombs" created by Israeli air force jets breaking the sound barrier at low altitude over the Gaza Strip. Only this week there have been 28 sonic booms, sometimes as little as an hour apart through the night. During five days in late September, the air force caused 29.

Palestinians describe the sound as an earthquake or huge bomb. They liken the effect to being hit by a wall of air that is painful on the ears, sometimes causing nosebleeds and "leaving you shaking inside".

"The Israelis do it after midnight and then every one or two hours. You try to go to sleep and then there's another one. When it happens night after night you become exhausted. You get a heightened sense of alert, waiting continuously for it to happen. People suffer hypertension, fatigue, sleeplessness."

"For children, the loud noise means danger. Adults may know it's only a sound but small children feel threatened. They are crying and clinging to their parents. Afterwards they are dazed and fearful, waiting for something to happen."

The removal of Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip has opened the way for this new terror tactic being deployed against the Palestinians.

A senior Israeli army intelligence source, who the military would not permit to be named, said the tactic is intended to break civilian support for armed Palestinian groups such as Islamic Jihad and Hamas. "We are trying to send a message in a way that doesn't harm people. We want to encourage the Palestinian public to do something about the terror situation," he said. "What are the alternatives? We are not like the terrorists who shoot civilians. We are cautious. We make sure nobody is really hurt."

The Palestinian health ministry estimates the sonic booms have caused miscarriages and heart problems. A majority of child patients seen at clinics as a result of the sonic booms were suffering from symptoms such as anxiety attacks, bedwetting, muscle spasms, temporary loss of hearing and breathing difficulties.

Two medical human rights groups have asked the Tel Aviv high court to outlaw the use of sound bombs on the grounds it amounts to illegal collective punishment and is detrimental to health.

The UN's Middle East envoy, Alvaro de Soto, agrees, and wrote this week in a letter to the Israeli high command: "Sonic booms are an indiscriminate instrument, the use of which punishes the population collectively. We ask therefore that their use be stopped without delay."

I think he chose his words rather daintily. "An indiscriminate instrument of torture" might be more apt,"which tortures the population collectively."

For God's sake Cain! Abel! Don't you think it's time to put a stop to this endless childish quarreling? Do you worship the same God or not? And even if you don't are you not brothers?

Instead of breaking barriers of sound, it's a time for breaking down the barriers of hatred you've created. And to break down that hideous snaking grey wall you've divided your country with - a fence of fascism and fear forbidding obstacle to world peace and disgrace to Humanity.

arab regimes do worse

06.11.2005 15:11

may I remind everyone that arab states tend to use worse systems than "sonic booms" in similar situations.

in the nineties, the lybian army bombed an entire town with planes killing a few hundred people, because a muslim fundamentalist sect had taken over the town and wanted to topple gheddafi's regime.

in 1983, the syrian army killed thousands of people when they bombed the city of hama, syria's fourth largest city, because the muslim brotherhood had taken over. that was collective punishment alright.

more people died on that day than the number of palestinians who have been killed by the israeli army in five years of intifada!

arab regimes' use these methods to stamp out descent, and they manage as well. the muslim brotherhood was stamped out in syria. nobody called the syrians nazis either. I'm sure the israelis could just bomb gaza seriously and kill a few thousand people, and that would be the end of the intifada. palestinians would be too terrified to conduct any more armed resistance or terrorist attacks, because they would fear more bombings from the sky.

I'm obviously not suggesting they do that, but I'm just pointing out they could. after all the palestinians don't seem to mind imposing collective punishments on israelis with their terrorist attacks.
