Disater prone Incinerator goes bankrupt

The company running the new giant incinerator and waste plant at Crymlyn Burrows on the Neath /Swansea border has gone bankrupt owing 40 million pounds .
The company ,an arm of the Portuguese HLC has only been operating the brand new incinerator complex as a PFI project with the Neath Port Talbot Council for a little over a year.

The giant incinerator has been dogged by controversay and opposition ever since it was publicly prposed some 6 years ago.
A Stop The Incinerator Campaign was formed led by socialists and residents of Crymlyn Burrows and the campaign drove the New Labour controlled council and its private partners mad with anger.
Eventually, in the teeth of intense opposition , the incinerator was opened for trials about 13 months ago but shortly afterwards was destroyed by a fire which broke out in one of the filter sections. The fire contaminated local houses and the beach at the nearby Swansea Bay.
The plant was eventually rebuilt and repened but it was clearly a lame duck despite the council promising a state of the art facility. Now the operating company has gone bankrupt owing 40 million mainly to the Royal Bank of Scotland. However ,miraculously the plant itself continues to operate with another hastily revamped arm of HLC apparently in control. The betting among observers is that the new company will only survive if it lands the contract to process the waste of the whole of Swansea. The incinerator complex already handles all the waste from Neath,Port Talbot and Bridgend ,but is handling it in a most incompetent way.If it grabs the Swansea waste contract the village of Crymlyn Burrows which has some 80 houses will have been turned into the waste capital of Wales.
The Stop The Incinerator will shortly be announcing a day of protest outside this dioxin producing plant. For years the campaign warned about the propsed plant saying it would be an environmental and health slum but even we did not anticpate that this state of the art plant would collapse financially so quickly.
New Labour and PFI strikes again.Well done!!

Incinerator opposition

Hey thanks for this posting. It might serve to give some impetus and inspiration back to the Anti(Onyx) incinerator in Sheffield, Yorkshire too. They are just completing a massive new energy to heat incinerator plant right near Sheffield Centre but all appears quiet in opposition nowadays, with one or two noble exceptions.
20 months ago there was a fairly large local opposition campaign including local folk and Greenpeace, FOE, the Green Party and the local anti-incinerator campaign called RABID.
Will watch this post for further news and development from Wales.
