Solidarity marks Sefton disciplinary hearings
02.11.2005 09:43
(1/11/05) Supporters gathered outside Bootle Town Hall in Liverpool to show solidarity with the six Sefton council workers who face disciplinary hearings today.
The dispute began when the six council workers were suspended after taking part in a successful protest against the authority’s proposed housing stock transfer.
The council accused the six of behaviour unbecoming of a council officerand bringing the council into disrepute. However, police logbooks stated that the demonstration was “peaceful” and passed without incident.
Two UNISON branch officers, Nigel Flanagan and Paul Summers, have still not been allowed to return to work.
“This morning’s show of solidarity was really well attended,” said Sefton local government branch chair Glen Williams. “We had branches here from all across the north west region and we were given more cheques for the hardship fund.”
Strike action in support of the suspended workers is continuing, with up to 50 UNISON members from the creditors section, personnel, student support section and the education admissions section on all out strike.
All submissions from the disciplinary hearing will be made today and a decision on the future of the suspended workers is expected in the next few days.
“We are sending a clear message to the council: the strike action will not end until the workers have all been reinstated,” said Williams.
Donations to the branch hardship fund should be sent to:

| have received information this morning that two leading Unison
Officials - (Nigel Flanagan & Paul Summers) employed by Sefton MBC
have today been dismissed following a disciplinary hearing. It is
quite clear that the only crime Nigel and Paul are guilty of is
being effective and excellent trade union officers and campaigning
against the transfer of housing stock by Sefton Council.
In the days and weeks ahead Unison Sefton Branch and Merseyside TUC
will be calling for financial and other support to try to get them
reinstated.
In the meantime messages of support can be sent to Unison Sefton
