Anti-Semitic chic

Klaus Rohrich | 17.10.2005 12:49 | Analysis

Jew baiters are alive and well and residing among the academic community in Europe and gaining ground as sweethearts of the Left.

While for some 50 years anti-Semitism was frowned upon, in recent years it has assumed a new cachet, as leftists who support the Palestinian cause blame Israel, and by implication, all Jews for their plight.

Daniel Bernard, France’s ambassador to Britain expressed The European Union’s (EU) sentiment toward Jews during a dinner party at Lord Conrad Black’s home in Britain, when he referred to Israel as “that shitty little country” and then stood by his comment by refusing to apologize. While Muslims complain bitterly about anti-Islam sentiments in the West, the incidence of violent anti-Semitic acts in France has seen a sharp increase in recent years. In fact, the increase is so alarming that the French government refuses to classify these acts as “hate crimes” and treats them instead as mere vandalism or other street crimes to avoid the perception that French anti-Semitism is increasing.

Britain’s George Galloway, a former Labour Party MP who was also an ardent supporter of Saddam Hussein, spoke at the Sept. 24 Anti-war rally in Washington, condemning Israel as a “little Hitler state in the Mediterranean.” Others who spoke at the rally included “Mother” Cindy Sheehan, the unbalanced darling of the Left who has discovered the limelight and is attempting to prolong her 15 minutes of fame with ever more outlandish utterances about the Iraq War. Currently, she blames the whole thing on, you guessed it, Israel.

The academic community has also jumped on the bandwagon with its own version of anti-Semitism, barring pro-Israel Jewish professors from sitting on university boards or attaining tenure. Currently Columbia, Stanford and 16 other U.S. universities are under investigation by Campus Watch, a watchdog organization that reviews and critiques Middle Eastern Studies in America with a view toward improving them.

One of the chief culprits identified by Campus watch is Professor Hamid Dabashi, Chairman of the Middle Eastern and Asian Language Studies Department at Columbia University. Dabashi calls Israel “a military state for the rising predatory empire of the United States.” This begs the question: if he is so opposed to the United States, What the hell is he doing living there, teaching American children? But that’s material for another column. Many students describe Prof. Dabashi’s department as “the department of fear” or the ”department of dishonesty”

"Professorial power is being abused," one student complained. "Students are being bullied because of their identities, ideologies, religions and national origins."

The term “neo-con” has become shorthand for “Jew” as ever more critics of the Bush administration point out that George W. Bush’s philosophical mentors all happen to be Jews. Paul Wolfowitz, Elliot Abrams, Richard Perle and William Kristol, publisher of TheWeekly Standard, are all considered sinister members of the pro-Israel, fascist, warmongering cabal propping up the hapless and intellectually challenged Bush.

It’s interesting to note that anyone questioning the racial or ethnic background of anti-war advocates such as say, Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton, would immediately be branded as racist with attempts being made to ruin or end their carrers. Why is it acceptable for individuals such as Jessie Jackson (who once referred to New York City as “Hymietown”) to express anti-Semitic sentiments and not acceptable for anyone else to express similar sentiments about other ethnic groups?

It has been said that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I firmly believe that there is likely to be a replay of the Holocaust, except this time around there will be different players. The Nazi with their “Aryan” myths will be replaced by Arabs with their own set of anti-Semitic myths. And in the same way that individuals such as Leon Degrelle of Belgium, Klaus Barbie of France or Oswald Mosley of Britain colluded with and embraced the Nazi belief structure, so are many members of the Left following in their footsteps today.

Western countries are passing “hate crime” laws to protect gays, women, blacks and a plethora of other groups. Shouldn’t these laws apply equally to Leftists calling for the elimination of Jews? If not, we will relive the nightmare of the 1930s and 1940s.

"leftists who support the Palestinian cause blame Israel, and by implication, all Jews for their plight."

Given that the vast majority of Jews do not live in Israel, have no desire to live in Israel and have therefore rejected the central call of Zionism that they should move there, why do you persist in drawing an equals sign between Zionist Israel and world Jewry?

Could it possibly be an attempt to slander all criticism of Israel as anti-semetic?

Surely not.

England= Palestine

There are times when it seems that the only problems of the British working class seem to be the creation of Palestinian Capitalist state.

Fortunatly it is only the left wing groups, not the real working class who worry about it

"Leftists calling for the elimination of Jews"

Well, this is of course illegal already in the UK. But first of all, I'd be interested (and surprised) to see examples of this. Especially in the mainstream media, or on ecture course syllubuses/ii. Please provide links, etc.

zionism is not the same as judaism

17.10.2005 14:06

israel a country, judaism is a religion.
the USA is a country, christianity is a religion
saudi arabia is a country, islam is a religion
just because some loony fundamentalist jews and christians and muslims are up to their idiocy and some of them in charge of countries DOES NOT MEAN that everyone either in those countries or partaking in those religions is also a loony
(simple logical analysis can prove this even to people whose common sense doesn't stretch that far)
and, most pertinent to this post, people criticising the policies of the governmenta of those countries, or the activities of religious zealots, or both, ARE NOT (NECESSARILY) CRITICISING ALL INHABITANTS OF THOSE COUNTRIES, NOR ALL PARTAKERS IN THE SAME RELIGION.
ok rant (nearly) over.
but such basic points to have to make again and again!
for sure there is racism, religionism, all sorts of shit in the world. but to pretend that israel and judaism are getting an unfair share of criticism, especially given current global and national political realities, is naive at best, deeply shameful and collaborative with fascist tendencies at worst.

wonderin what authors like this are trying to prove

non-sequitor

17.10.2005 14:15

"blame Israel, and by implication, all Jews"

- non-sequitor i'm afraid mate. Theres no a priori connection between criticism of a state and prejudice against the majority ethno-religious-national group of that state. Criticising british and american foreign policy isn't anti-christian per se, criticising the saudi dictatorship isn't islamophobic per se, criticising the chinese state isn't anti-buddhist per se etc etc ...

The fact this is your starting preposition, and its backed up by slanders like "George Galloway, a former Labour Party MP who was also an ardent supporter of Saddam Hussein" - I'm no GG fan but he consistently condemned saddam eg in the commons vote on hallabja (cabinet figures notably didn't etc). And how is 'neo-con' - an ideology, shorthand for 'jew' - I have no idea the ethno-religious-national identity of leading neocons, and frankly i don't care.

Fight racism wherever it is rather than constructing logic-devoid polemic against an ill defined political current ('the left'). And if your looking for Oswald Mosely's heirs, they're still pretty easy to spot:  http://libcom.org/hosted/antifa/theopposition.html

Too Simplistic

17.10.2005 14:18

Israel is guilty of appalling crimes against humanity. Waste of time trying to deny it. Israel is an outpost of the USA's Empire. Waste of time trying to deny it.

To suggest that criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic in general is crude, (usually) unsubstantiated gibberish. The Bush regime are war-mongerers. That does not suggest that ALL Americans are likewise, now does it?

It seems more likely that if Israel is not held to account, and brought within humanitarian, legal and military norms, their continued abuses of their neighbours will only serve to encourage anti-Semitism globally.

In speaking out in favour of Palestine against Israel, most on the left are very clear that it is the behaviour of the Israeli government/military they oppose, and rarely if ever (in fact, I am yet to find one incidence) are there any comments suggesting that all Jews be held to account for Israel's actions.

Caution is needed on both sides of the debate, but trying to stifle the voices of reason by crying 'Nazi' is unproductive and irresponsible.

'leftists who support the Palestinian cause blame Israel, and by implication, all Jews for their plight'

What implication would that be then? Why do Zionists always come up with thiscrap? No 'leftists' blame 'all Jews' for the atrocities of the Israeli state.

definitional probs!

17.10.2005 17:11

i completely understand what you're saying here, but there's a problem with your definition of 'leftist'. Firstly to be left isn't a real ideology as such, si you can't really put ist on the end of it, but this isn't the main point here, that was just me being pedantic!

Basically, to be properly left wing competely cotradicts racism PER SE, in whatever guise. I would suggest that what you really mean is opportunistic populists PURPORTING to be left(ist).

one more thing

17.10.2005 17:14

by the way by saying i understand what you're saying, it doesn't mean that i agree with it!!

to suggest that there will be some sort of new holocaust is mindless propagandising, and pretty much living in the past. yeah the jews have been fucked over for thousands of years, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will continue to be so. It is unfair to blame 'the arabs' as you lovingly put it for the shortfalls of the israeli state. Anti-semitism may still be a problem, but fighting racism with racism is not the answer

what matter is who really suffers on this Earth

17.10.2005 17:27

Can we please hide this jewish racist garbage. Its presence here is particularly sick, given the NeoCons just exterminated vast numbers of muslims in revenge for a bomb that killed 5 US terrorists in Iraq on Saturday.

The americans bombed a crowd of children that had gathered round the wreakage of a vehicle. I bet Tony Blair, Jack Straw, and Sharon are masturbating to the in-plane footage as I type.

Here's a bet. A street full of children blown to pieces, and I bet not ONE of the filthy Blair-supporting Mass Media outlets carries the story as a major headline. Of course, the same Mass Media is almost entirely jewish controlled, allowing an absolute application of racism to be applied to the importance given to news events.

One child dies in Israel = top headlines. NeoCons butcher a whole street of children in Iraq, and it'll be a miracle if most people even get to hear of the story.

What a pile of shite

17.10.2005 19:59

When I worked on a community newspaper in Edinburgh in the 1980s we used to get ready-written articles from the South African embassy condemning our local MP for campaigning against apartheid and not caring enough about local issues. They sent them all over the country, and lazy editors would put them in.

This stuff is much the same.

"leftists who support the Palestinian cause blame Israel, and by implication, all Jews for their plight". Your implication, an implication that encourages the very anti-semitism the left are against. In two decades of work on the left I have only met two anti-semites, and both got chucked out our anti-poll tax group.

"Daniel Bernard referred to Israel as “that shitty little country” Well it is.

"George Galloway, condemning Israel as a “little Hitler state in the Mediterranean.” Ditto.

"Professor Hamid Dabashi calls Israel “a military state for the rising predatory empire of the United States.” Quite insightful, and true.

The term “neo-con” has become shorthand for “Jew”. not with me mate, if anything I thought it was a christian thang...

"Leftists calling for the elimination of Jews". Name these 'leftists' and source their comment or shut the fuck up.
