No N25 - Anti road meeting report

luke | 12.10.2005 12:15 | Ecology | Globalisation | Social Struggles

On Friday 7th of October the Norwich No N25 Campaign held a meeting in Blythe Jacks School.

The meeting outlined the reasons for resisting the road, these included

- the planned route being indirectly used to assist airport expansion

- increased noise and light pollution for nearby villages

- separation of village communities and links between villages

- destruction and damage to county wildlife sites and sites of specific scientific interest

- the destruction of popular public bridleways

- subsequent rise in council taxes

- increases in CO2 emmissions

- sourcing of materials from the south-coast sea bed, thus damaging fishing industries and sealife

Unsurprisingly the road plans are riddled with the usual council PR tactics such as using prices for building materials that havent been updated since 2000 to give the impression that the road will be cheaper than it actually is. The council has so far spent nearly £6,000,000 on the planning stages and the costs are continuing to rise.

The campaign aims to stop this road from ever being built, already protests have been held at council offices and regular meetings have been held. We would like to call upon all ecological groups and community groups within and outside of Norwich to help in anyway they can. Donations can be made through the campaign website where bank details are available and we encourage anyone with an interest to come along to protests and meetings to find out more.

NEXT MEETING: Friday, 14 October, "No N25 Campaign" planning meeting, 7.30 pm Playhouse Theatre lounge bar, St. George's St. Norwich. All welcome, particularly the coordinators mentioned below or their reps.

NEXT PROTEST: Tuesday, 1 November, Demonstration at Ely, at the start of the EERA Examination in Public. Offers of transport for banners etc. most welcome.

Campaign statement: As a group of people, i.e. Norwich residents, we disagree with the councils decision to build part or whole of the NDR (N25). This will damage the environment, disrupt and destroy villages and increase traffic. Use the resources to improve peoples lives. Do not build a road to nowhere!!!
