Dan Roberts | 06.10.2005 23:00 | Analysis | World

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files- broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. China, Netherlands, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (October 7) is up at the website
in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:00)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA-A typhoon in eastern China resulted in severe damage affecting over 3 million people. The head of the IAEA says good progress is being made in the conflict over Iran's nuclear development.
From NETHERLANDS-An analysis of the tribulations of the US Republican party, with Tom Delay's problems and the accusations of cronyism a major topic on International news this week. The former President of Ecuador has been granted asylum in Colombia, adding more pressure to the conflicts brewing between the 2 adjacent nations.
From CUBA-Weather caused disasters swept Central America this week, especially in El Salvador and Guatemala. An Italian court has issued more arrest warrants for CIA operatives involved in the "Extraordinary Rendition" program- kidnapping terror suspects to other countries for torture. Then a Viewpoint on the murder of a Puerto Rican independence activist by FBI agents.
From RUSSIA- Talks are beginning on Turkey joining the EU. The Iraqi Foreign Minister says it will take 5 years to restore his country, which he says is currently suggestive of Germany or Tokyo at the end of WW2. The EU has imposed a weapons embargo on Uzbekistan and suspended cooperation- is this the result of telling the US to abandon its military bases there?

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm (PST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- (13.3MB)
