Israel's West Bank Barrier has become the most visible manifestation
of the Israeli military occupation and most pressing issue for
Palestinians. Often misleadingly called a "fence", the considerable
structure snakes through the West Bank on Palestinian land, leaving
Palestinians on the wrong side isolated from their land, extended
families, and way of life.

Misleading

21.09.2005 04:41

It is interesting that you say it is "misleading" to call it a fence and refer to the separation barrier as a wall.

Whilst most Palestinian propaganda shows a concrete wall, in fact, the sections where a solid wall has been built are only a small part of the total anti-terrorist fence project. When the entire project is completed (including the section near Jerusalem), the walled sections will make up only about 5% of the total.

In other words, YOU are misleading by referring to it as a wall, and a liar by suggesting that Israelis are misleading. Here are references, show me yours:

Furthermore, there is demonstrable evidence that the fence has reduced terrorist attacks.
Why is this a problem for you? I can completely understand why preventing Palestinian terrorist attacks against Israelis would be a "pressing issue" for the Palestinians. Destroying Israel was always more important than education, jobs or welfare. The PA did nothing to stop terror, a fence did, in a completely non-violent manner. No use crying about it now. But you will....

I don't suppose terrorism will be discussed at your meeting?

'Truce' with Palestinians

21.09.2005 07:51

Whilst "Bullshit detector" is keen to discuss the architecture ruled illegal by the International Court of Justice (and legal by the Israeli Supreme Court who dance to a different tune), he or she forgets to mention that the Palestinians voted in Abu Mazen, and that the major armed factions agreed to a 'truce' with the Israelis, in order to allow the opportunity for a negotiated settlement.

Israel demands this truce, blames poor old Mahmoud when some faction violates it and then the Hasbarah troops insist that it is the wall which has reduced Palestinian attacks. Israel of course has continued with its war crimes regardless of the fall in attacks.

A true "bullshit detector" would see the laager mentality of zionism for what it truly is, a perverted and racist ideology out of step with life in the 21st century.

The barrier

21.09.2005 08:12

The barrier has been effective in preventing suicide bombers. Fact
The barrier is mostly fence with only a small amount solid wall. Fact
There are no recorded, documented cases of farmers being permanently cut off from their land. Fact

A wall? What wall?

21.09.2005 11:27

More than 100 miles of the 425-mile barrier have already been built. The towns of Qalqilya and Tulkarem have been surrounded by high concrete walls and farming villages have been cut off from their land.

Can you feel the love?

Jack is lying: fact!

"There are no documented cases of Palestinians farmers being cut off from their land". Sorry but there are: plenty upon plenty upon plenty of facts about this. Take look at a topograhical map; where does the wall/fence go (it is true that most part of the wall/fence is a fence, however, it still serves the same purpose as a wall); where the best agricultural land is, around illegal settlements that happen to be built on top of aquifiers.

Now it is a fact that it has stopped suicide bombings in Israel, no-one is disputing this. But what most Palestinians are asking is if Israelis want that fucking wall/fence why don't they build it on the green line??? Practically I agree with this position, though I do believe that bulding bridges would fight terror much better than causing more. Palestine has become even more of a pressure cooker, and any kind of fence will not be able to keep the lid on that. If Israel is concerned about security they can do what 65-75% of their populatiuon wants to get rid of the settlements and end the occupation. Now that is fact and not make beleive fiction

What ????

21.09.2005 15:39

Concentration Camps ? What a load of tosh, I am sick of the number of innacurate posting littering the newswire concerning the situation in Israel. Israel has built a fence / barrier / wall (you decide) to stop the easy access of suicide bombers to Israeli areas, this has been a success in that it has reduced the number of them by an enourmous degree. Nobody has built or is building any concentration camps.

Find out some facts - you look foolish

Interesting discussion about different kinds of walls can be found here:
 http://www.eurozine.com/article/2004-08-12-pullan-en.html

from "A one-sided wall", by Wendy Pullan:

"And yet, not all walls impose such draconian conditions, nor are all inherently bad. To some extent, our present understanding is conditioned by the modern study of the nature of borders. At the end of the nineteenth century, the new discipline of political geography began to distinguish between the relatively broad border region or fringe, and the borderline itself which was essentially an abstract line on a map. Such an observation spawned much ensuing interest and research into the culture of border areas; even more significantly, it is also a reflection on the idea that certain lines of division should never be fully realised. In some ways, this recalls practices of many centuries earlier; the Romans, for example, ploughed a furrow, usually circular and known as the poemerium, ritually to mark the extent of a new town. Under normal circumstances, the poemerium was only loosely echoed in the city walls, which deviated as necessary and were added to and changed over time to represent the practical structures of daily life; the result was an important but distant memory of the poemerium."
