Murder and rape - fact or fiction?

Anarchy in Action | 06.09.2005 08:37

I know it isn't Indymedia policy to link to 'mainstream' media sources, but this Guardian (UK) article does cast doubt on the generally accepted idea that humans resort to (sub) bestial behaviour at the first sign of the collapse of 'order'... Maybe we are 'better' than some give us credit for...

How true are the tales of murdered babies and raped seven year olds?

From UK Guardian 6/9/05  http://www.guardian.co.uk/katrina/story/0,16441,1563532,00.html

I'm sure that as time moves on far more true examples of mutual aid and support will emerge from the New Orleans situation that will give lie to the idea that 'we' are not capable of behaving like civilised human beings as soon as 'official' order collapses.

Not sure why

There has been some curious reporting from the area. For example the three British women interviwed at Heathrow all spoke in glowing terms about the US military and how well they had been treated at the Astrodome, this conflicted with other reports. A 21 year man from London who was also at the Dome said he saw no examples of the attacks reported to widely.

I wonder who is to gain from these attempts to distort the truth ?

Alan

The women in the superdome .....

.... were surrounded by armed cops. They could have made the reports to them.

It definitely suited the racist agenda to paint all the poverty stricken black men from New Orleans as murderers and rapists - but the fact is - the authorities cannot confirm any of it.

The BBc article shows that the racist ideas of the British refugees were flamed by the warnings from the troopers - to whom reports of rape could have been made.

George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People

In the aftermath of other natural disasters, like earthquakes in Columbia, where many are black, the people who find themselves without government assistance, the norm... resort to assisting each other and digging out survivors with bare hands.

In this situation however, people were not allowed to help themselves, they were contained in concentration-camp like conditions for six days, like animals, deprived of food, water and medicine.

The young, old, sick, dying and dead!

Anyone, of any race, colour or creed, caught up in these unnatural circumstances, could be forgiven for lawlessness, but black Americans bore it with dignity... let's not shit on them some more with racist crap.

or how about the Black Panthers?

The Panthers were founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in California in 1966. They did not just advocate black uprising and revolution. The Panthers worked with all minorities regardless of colour and creed, created a Free Food Program for the hungry, provided free medical care and set up youth bands to encourage pride in the poor communities. The Panthers were providing services that the government would not.

History mr racist, will prove you wrong.

New Orleans: Haiti activist Bill Quigley reports on escape from flooded hospital
by Bill Quigley and Debbie Dupre Quigley Tuesday, Sep. 06, 2005 at 1:28 AM

A message from Bill Quigley and Debbie Dupre Quigley: Thanks to the many people who have reached out to us – it has been so satisfying. There have been many incredible acts of generosity and courage. We saw them everywhere.

We were picked up at the hospital by two 25-year-old guys who put a little motor on a rowboat and ferried people to safety. We got on a truck with people who had gone back to find their mentally disabled brother. Families have come to look for family members in the shelters.
Now that we are out of New Orleans, we are so disappointed with the disproportionate attention paid to looters and to a few hundred people who were acting criminally. Nobody in Louisiana thinks that people are looters if they broke into stores for diapers or food. People stealing TVs or shooting others made up a fraction of a percent of the people in New Orleans, but looting seems to have attracted attention in the media out of all proportion.
The distorted emphasis on criminal behavior has stigmatized the people who are now in shelters. Events this week exposed racial, economic, and geographic segregation in our society that includes inequality in planning and resources. People need to stick up for the folks in the shelters. I guarantee there's a shelter coming to a city near you. There are not enough places here for all these people. The New Orleans community is like a glass paperweight that was smashed by a fifty pound iron mallet. Poor people from New Orleans are going to be everywhere. People need to help them, not fear them. Our question should not be, "Why was there looting," but "How are your families?" and "How can we help?"
There are a million stories of inspiration, love, hope, affection and community from New Orleans. The focus should be on the 99-1/2 percent of people who were brave and patient and who managed to help others.
We are glad that so many people are reaching out to the very poor people of New Orleans. Many people are not even a paycheck away from poverty. We know schoolteachers whose entire life savings was invested in their home, which is now underwater. They have $200 in their pockets, and they're living in a shelter along with their extended family, hoping to get food stamps. Many people have much less. All of them have no idea what will happen to the lives and work and homes they left behind.
The 100,000 or so people who were left behind in New Orleans are a reflection of the people who are left behind in our country and in the world. We need to turn this disaster into an opportunity for the nation to reevaluate our priorities and invest in construction, both here and in the rest of the world. Thank God there is no one to bomb in retaliation. Instead of wasting our resources on destruction, we should rededicate our people, resources and creativity to addressing the fundamental problems that were exposed when the superficial covering of New Orleans was ripped away, leaving us struggling for survival as people do in so many other countries.
We love you, and we appreciate the support that has come in to us in so many ways.
Peace, Bill & Debbie

Debbie Dupre Quigley is an oncology nurse. She and her husband Bill, who is a law professor at Loyola University New Orleans, spent four nights and five days in a hospital in New Orleans before they were evacuated.

50,000 rampaging nigger savages... if you are white and any where near that, its almost a guarantee of being raped.

Bush should have nuked new orleans the second the rampaging started. The token few whites left are nothing more then collaterol damage in clearing out 50k niggers.

here's an idea

06.09.2005 23:13

Not the same realist as above, but another realist.. there's a lot of us these days especially since the hurricane.

How about this.

Imagine the hurricane happened, just like it has.

And now imagine, that all the blacks that involved themselves in robbing, looting, shooting and raping, and they were in the minority, instead helped eachother.

The "racists" wouldn't be making capital out of it then now would they? Because there would be no event to make capital out of.

Imagine if the blacks in the stadium had made rules, had helped themselves, had organised their situation and not descended into "Lord of the Flies" style savagery. Would the "racists" be making profit from that? Certainly not, they'd be trying to ignore it, trying to sweep it away because it'd confound their prejudices.

A lot of people who you'd call "racist" believe had the victims all been white then they would have been helping themselves and eachother, and the situation in the stadium would have been much safer, law abiding, organised, etc. This is because people see the "hell drome" mentality all around them in every ghetto in the US and beyond.

Yet all we see in New Orleans, is so-called prejudice being prooved correct.

That poses a problem for the average IMC user. So they rush to censor any material that doesn't 100% conform to their party line. Because it challenges liberalism and might make people question their views. That is dangerous for the left, so dissent is silenced just like in Communist Russia.

Um, why don;t you join the board and do something?

But you're right, this comment has no safe place it can rest in normal peaceful society (in which I include UK iMC). Perhaps we should just be sorry and a bit worried for the poster.

Virtual reality racists

So New Orleans is a poor city and the poorest of the poor remained behind most of these people are black.
A small minority of these people have taken up a gang land life style, as promoted on MTTV in RAP music which is basically an advert for the consumer society, mercedes, BMW various training shoes and other designer clothes. Most of the unemployed or lolw paid workers coming from the low life areas (ghetto's) want to wear this sort of shite and many of them are black but not all of them by any means.
In europe things are pretty much the same except that a higher percentage of what the brits call "poor working class kids" are white, many of them right wing, and they like to wear for example Lonsdale sports wear, banned in Holland due to being associatted with violent people.(shops refusing to sell the label).
British inner city area like St Pauls in Bristol and Moss Side , Manchester , Brixton are well known for street violence and most of it is caused by black west indians. But through out britain housing estates are terrorised by drunken white youths who damage people houses and gardens and piss in phone boxes and lifts and fight each other or other gangs the police and so on.
If these people were left to there own devices in the way that the people in New Orleans were, for nearly a week, I hate tlo think of what would happen.
Certainly there are some pretty nasty people about out there but I have worked and lived with black people for years and have nothing but respect for them. They have the same feelings as white people they love their children the same as white people and I bet that the majority of the black people in New Orleans wether they were in the stadium or out on the street were looking to help their fellow citizens but because of a violent minority they all get tarred with the same brush well that bollox and so is generalizing.

Your just confusing the the main stream media's version with reality, it's not it's the version that suits our corporate masters. It's easy for them to create stereo types they are busy with it all the time and after they have repeated the lie a good few times it becomes what you so called realists call Reality ..

Besides White Riot i wanna Riot White Riot I wanna White Riot of my own !!!

color complaints

09.09.2005 15:45

It is shocking to see such biggotry on IMC but there you go, it exists everywhere and is bred I'm sure, out of ignoramce and misunderstanding rather than out of malice. However, that's no excuse, racism is racism regardless of its origin.
This never ending discussion circling aroung the outdated and inaccurate topic of color (race) is boring. There is no intrinsic correlation between the color of any given human being's skin and their tendency to riot (loot, murder, rape etc...). There is however, an unfortunate correlation between skin color and access to decent education, equal opportunities and the wealth of the white ruling class. Further, there is some correlation between poverty and violence, and given that black people are subjected to more poverty than white an artificial correlation between black people and violence is born.
Desperation breeds violence and poor black people and poor white people alike are desperate because our governments and leaders allow it to be so. Behaviour is learned not innate.
Just a thought...
