James Slater | 03.09.2005 18:55

Represetatives from the bus, rail and airport services will gather for a conference next Tuesday, Sept 6th. The conference is organised for the first time by the East Midlands Passenger Transport Users’ Forum (EMPTUF).

From the Notts County Council pressrelease:

"It will be an opportunity for people to give their views and feedback on the region’s transport links and key topics of discussion include:"

* The importance of public transport - both within the East Midlands and its links to other regions
* How passengers can achieve change
* Recent changes in passenger representation.

EMPTUF Chairman Alan Meredith said: “We hope that passengers from across the East Midlands will grasp this opportunity and come along to get their view across about transport services in the region.”

It is being held at the Newstead Miners Welfare Community Centre, Tilford Road, Newstead Village, Nottingham from 1pm, although registration starts at 12.30pm.

Some local campaign groups are involved as well:

One of tem, Bus Users UK, formerly known as NFBU, is an independent group which was formed to give bus passengers a voice.

"Years ago bus services were run by local authorities and nationalised industry. Now bus companies run for profit. Very often the aims of making a profit and of giving you a good bus service are one and the same. Sometimes they’re not, and, except in London, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the law that brought in the changes didn’t do anything to help passengers get their views across. BUS USERS UK stands in the gap to give you a means to have your say."
