Alternative bookshop in Bristol closes

After 23 years of community service, Bristol's last remaining alternative community bookshop has closed. Sadly the closure of Greenleaf Books reflects an ongoing trend of the closure of alternative bookshops, as the pressure of trading within capitalist society becomes overwhelming.

Greenleaf Books was set up in 1982 at 82 Colston St, Bristol BS1. It was, and remained to the end, run by a women-only worker co-op. It offered a friendly space, a magnificent resource for alternative books & related material/info, and also a postal address for over 100 radical & community groups in the Bristol area. Now it has gone, and the co-op members face debts totalling 8 grand.
