The Akha Hill Tribe in Thailand HELP NEEDED

Mathew McDonald | 26.08.2005 11:51 | Culture | Social Struggles | World

British Student Adam Lane is in the village of Pah Nmm. The Thai army terrorized this village and the host family. They threatened them with arrest if foreigners stay in this village. In a conversation today with him at the village I was told that the villagers are still terrified that they will be arrested for foreigners being there.

Urgent: We Need Action! NOW!!!!!

STILL VERY FEW PEOPLE HAVE CONTACTED THE THAI EMBASSEY, CONSULATE OR THEIR MP'S ABOUT THIS, PLEASE DO AND LET THEM KNOW THE AKHA ARE NOT ALONE...

Dear Friends:

We have not seen much mobilization on this.

British Student Adam Lane is in the village of Pah Nmm. The Thai army terrorized this village and the host family. They threatened them with arrest if foreigners stay in this village. In a conversation today with him at the village I was told that the villagers are still terrified that they will be arrested for foreigners being there.

The question is, are WE going to let the Thai army WIN?????????

If we ARE NOT going to let the Thai Army win, if we ARE NOT going to abandon the Akha at this remote village, then we need you to mobilize, we need you to be writing emails to the Thai Embassy in the UK,  enquiries@thaiconsul-uk.com and we need other actions to bring this point home to the Thais that we hold them accountable and will not let them continue their war of terror against the Akha.

I am told that on the main road before the cutoff to the village that the Thai Army has now built a checkpoint box, a new one and put a few soldiers there as they have done at other village locations we defended to increase the harrassment of all who would pass there to help the Akha. That is why people visiting to Hooh Yoh are no longer allowed to stay in the village the night. By all appearances the Thai Army is winning, and some 500,000 Akha still do not have noteworthy representation or support for their human rights cause in the west.

Noticibly, the missionaries are silent as usual on the Akha human rights struggle.

But what about you? Will you take action to protect Pah Nmm? 42 families, 450 people.

If we are going to continue to defend Akha human rights, if the Akha are going to have hope against Thai oppression and silencing, then we need NOW to see some action, to see people mobilize for measurable results on this case.

Thailand is not a poor country. It has substantial relations with the west. But the Akha situation is dire and it is not improving. It is getting worse. The number of tourists, those enjoying the fruits of Thailand is not decreasing, it is party land. Who are the Akha? people may just as well say.

We need your support to put dramatic pressure on the Thai government about this village situation at Pah Nmm. It is unacceptable.

Will you write your MP, will you take responsibility for the Akha of Pah Nmm?

Without you, the Akha have not much hope.

We will never give up fighting for the safety of the Akha people, what about you?

Write your MP, go to your government, where ever you are, and demand action to protect the Akha. Have you tried that yet, does your goverment even know who the Akha are? Have you gone before?

Everywhere there are Thai Consuls, go, write them, show up in person, picket them, without it, there will be no change.
