Police on Thursday continued searching for the Palestinian man who stabbed a young British yeshiva student to death Wednesday night with a 30-centimeter kitchen knife in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The stabbing victim, identified as 21-year-old Shmuel Mat, was killed near the Jaffa Gate.

The murder was documented on video cameras the police have positioned around the Old City.

Mat's companion, a fellow student from the United States, was moderately wounded. The two victims had been studying at an ultra-Orthodox yeshiva in the Old City.

Members of the British student's family refused to allow officials to perform an autopsy on his body, Israel Radio reported early Thursday.

In response to the families wishes, police said they would make do with an external examination of the body.

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox demonstrators caused damage to an ambulance Wednesday night at the hospital, protesting their assumption that an autopsy would be performed on Mat's body.

Police at the scene dispersed the rioters by force. Three police officers were injured and four people were arrested on suspicion of causing disturbance.

After the attack late on Wednesday, the American managed to reach a police station some 200 meters away and led police to his critically wounded friend at the site of the stabbing.

The victim was taken to Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Kerem, where he died of his wounds; his companion was hospitalized at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.

The police said they were pursuing the attacker who had fled the scene. Yoram Halevy, commander of the Old City's police station, said a Palestinian carried out the stabbings. Police said the attack was nationally motivated.

Violence of any kind is wrong. But how did they know the assailant was Palestinian?

1. The security fence has stopped hundreds of attacks, so it has not failed, unfortunately some terrorist do manage to get through or are already in Israel.

2. This was a peaceful religious student who was brutally murdered, I know he was Jewish so you will seek to justify it, but i was wrong. Simple as that. Seeking to justify this crime is demonstrative of your lack of respect and your immaturity.

How did they know the attacker was Palestinian?

The article says "The murder was documented on video cameras", and there are also witnesses.

Next time if you want to ask a question I reccomend you read the article in full not just the headline

Sorry, so it being on video means we know it was a Palestinian because he was carrying a flag? The presence of witnesses confirms it because he shouted 'I am a Palestinian'? Otherwise I don't see your point. What does a Palestinian look like that is so distinuguishable from all other peoples in the Middle East in the absence of any additional evidence?

Must be a conspiracy. Arabs wouldn't hurt a fly

The bottom line is that a British citizen was murdered in Israel , most likely by an Arab (either Israeli or palestinian)
All of the angst here is because the vicitm was also a Jew and therefore anything surrounding the issue must be questioned as though it's some kind of international Jewish conspiracy. It is not unusual for Arabs to murder Jews.
