nfn | 18.08.2005 11:17 | Ecology | Repression | Liverpool
Have you got free time over the summer? Please consider going to over to Ireland to join the Rossport Solidarity Camp in County Mayo. The local community needs as much help as it can get to fight the construction of a dangerous oil
pipeline. Five local farmers are currently in prison for blocking access to their land. This fight is winnable - but it needs support.

BOYCOTT SHELL - FREE THE ROSSPORT FIVE
Five Irish farmers have spent more than 50 days in prison for blocking the construction of an oil pipeline on their land:
"We are currently in prison for refusing to allow Shell and their Irish Government partners build a pipeline close to our family homes. Our crime was to refuse access to our lands. We have refused access because of the certainty that if this pipeline as currently proposed ruptures we, our families and neighbours, will die.
What would you do if a court ordered you to accept the installation of a potentially lethal pipeline which no state agency has or will take responsibility for? ... "

In Mayo Shell and Statoil, with the approval of the Irish government, are planning to take land from local residents and build a high pressure gas pipeline that will go past their houses:
The pressure inside the pipeline will be up to four times greater than that of the biggest Bord Gais pipelines. The pipeline will be going through boggy land with a history of landslides. This construction will be using previously
untried methods to stabilise the bog surface and involve a massive amount of traffic. Emissions from the refinery will affect the nearby Carrowmore Lake, source of the regional water supply. ... The government is giving them our gas for
practically nothing and then we will have to buy it back .
