Hardship fund for Gate Gourmet workers

Hardship fund for Gate Gourmet workers
17/08/2005

Over 800 T&G members at Gate Gourmet - who are predominantly low paid Asian, black and white women - were dismissed by the company last week. The workers continue their fight to draw attention to the harsh, shameless mistreatment of a loyal and hard working workforce by a company with no respect for labour relations or basic employment rights.

Negotiations are currently taking place in order to seek the reinstatement of the workers, many of whom now face financial hardship. In addition to providing a grant from central funds, the T&G has set up a hardship fund for all the Gate Gourmet sacked workers. If you would like to make a donation, however large or small, please send to:

The end for Gate Gourmet

19.08.2005 08:10

Hopefully this dispute will mean the end for Gate Gourmet and their awful tastless food. You'll notice that the cabin crew frequently bring their own food - what do you think feeding on airline food everyday would do to your health. Any passenger who takes a reasonable number of flights, say two sectors a week, must also be exposed to an unhealthy level of preprocessed gunk.

It's not difficult to create heathy prepackaged meals suitable for serving on a aircraft. It would mean some changes to the menus - more salads and fresh fruit, which could easily be kept fresh for the duration of even the longer flights.

And encourage passengers to drink more water - the low rent airlines which charge for bottled water are evil scum in my opinion but there's usually a drinking fountain on board which you can fill your own bottle from. Last time I did, one of the cabin crew joked about charging me for it - landing in africa where you go nowhere without a bottle of water.

Fly vegi - the food is marginally better and you get your meals before the masses.
