Reclaim the Precinct

Skaters took to the streets of Southampton last night to compete against each other, but also to take back some of the public space in the heart of the city.

Around 20 skaters, young and old, took part in Reclaim the Precinct event last night in central Southampton. Pissed off at the lack of a decent space in the centre of the town, they disobeyed local bye-laws and took to the central Precinct instead. Using the available obstancles they held a short competition.

More events like this are welcomed in a city centre that is in dire need of a spruce up. However, it is unlikely that more corporate shopping malls will significantly improve the centre. Whats needed is more public space that can be used by everyone not just consumers.
