One dead and over 50 injured as police spread chaos at Czech Tekno Festival
Notts IMC | 05.08.2005 22:37 | World
The annual Czech 'CzechTek' (also known as Technival) is one of the biggest free festivals in Europe. With over 6000 people attending this year, it has met with severe police hostility. Police blocked access to the legally rented festival site and later attacked it, resulting in over 50 injured people. One man has been confirmed dead. Police has stated he was killed in a "normal car accident". The Czech League of Human Rights have called upon Interior Minister František Bublan to immediately resign. A large demonstration against the police brutality, in Prague on Sunday July 31th was attended by over 5000 people and was supported by the former Czech President Vaclav Havel. The demonstration in the capital ended in a streetrave. Solidarity actions have been taking place throughout Europe.

On Friday morning (June 29th) the police redirected cars coming from Germany to the border in Rozvadov to other border crossings. According to police statistics 105 out of 249 foreigners were turned back on the borders on the base of "colored old cars, haircuts and tatoos". The motorway D5 was closed on both sides. Around 150 people blockaded the road demanding to continue on their way to the festival site (in Milec). After 6 hours, following an ultimatum, at 13:00 the police used water-cannons and heavy force to clear the blocked motorway.
During the night several thousands of visitors managed to pass the police blockage, leaving their cars behind on the roads. On Saturday morning the festival started with about 5000 visitors and around 300 vehicles that managed to get on the site. Soundsystems started to play music.
The first police action took place on Saturday 30th July. At 16.25 the police requested that the than 6000+ participants leave the gathering otherwise a police action will follow. Over 1000 policemen, water cannon, armoured tank and a low-flying helicopter entered the festival site, trying to remove people. A second attack at 22pm was led with extreme brutality. Police in 'riot gear' without identification numbers, refusing to give identification, info about their command or first aid entered the site. The raid resulted in hundreds of injuries, including cuts, bruises, burnings and broken arms. Some people were in still in shock the next day with red faces from tear gas. Police seem to have intentionally damaged vehicles, electronic equipment and other property. Some say the attack was led with clear intention to cause injuries. Reports say the police used 'masses of teargas' and desorientation grenades. In some cases they broke car windows using iron bars, threw tear gas granades inside, to force people out.
The police have confirmed the death of a young man attending the festival. Reportedly he was "killed by a truck which left the site". No witnesses were found to verify the police statement.
"The festival was legal"
Police stated different reasons for blocking access to the festival site, throughout Friday (July 29). The final reason for the raid of the site on the Friday night was "threat of damaging the surrounding private pieces of land". Festival organisers give a very different picture: "Czechtek is open-air international and multicultural music festival with 12 years of tradition. Not only different genres of music, but also videoart and other art performances take place at this unique event of free culture. In all history of the festival there have been no significant problems. Participants have always cleaned up after themselves and take responsibility for their actions."
The contract with the owner of the site where the festival was to take place was clearly shown to police. "The festival was legal in every aspect was according to Czech Republic law". However, official police statements said that the legal contract between the owner of the land and the festival organisers is invalid. The Czech Minister of Internal Affairs, Frantisek Bublan of the social-democratic party CSSD, stated that the contract is invalid and that the owner of the land revoked it. Later, the contract got into the media, as well as several interviews with the legal owner of the land, confirming his support for the event and the validity of the contract. Following his statement the Czech Senator Jaromír Štětina and the Czech Green Party requested that Minister Buban stops the raid against citizens of Czech republic which have not commited any crime by their gathering on a legaly rented land.
A woman from a nearby village, owner of adjoining land, said she had been woken up by police friday morning, long before people began to arrive, taken to police station and by false arguments encouraged to sign complaint. The citizens of Újezd pod Přimdou, a small town near the place of CT 2005 signed a petition and handed in to the main Police Commander requesting that the participants are allowed to continue their way. The streets of the city were filled up by cars and people who failed to go through the police street cordons.
"Acts of Solidarity"
The League of Human Rights has called upon Interior Minister František Bublan to recognize his responsibility for the completely inappropriate and illegal intervention committed by the police and to immediately resign. On the weblog of Czechtek a request for solidarity was posted asking people to join a demonstration in Prague at 19.00 in front of the Ministery of Justice. The police assault ended around 19.20 (before the evening news) resulting in 50 injured people on both the side of police and the participants. The organizers of Czechtek 2005 stated that they are going to appeal to European Court for Human Rights in Strassbourg.
Solidarity actions have been taken place around Europe. Actions took place outside ambassies in Paris, Bratislava and Helsinki. In Berlin the annual 'Fuckparade' redirected it's planned route to pass by the embassy in Berlin and the czech consulate in Salzburg was spray painted. On Sunday July 30th demonstrations took place in Prague (photo's) and Brno (photo's). Over 5000 people participated in the demonstration in Prague, which was supported by the former Czech President Vaclav Havel.

i have spoken to the lawyers at the human rights office in czech and they are bulding a case against the police about the brutality at this event.
if you or anyone you know was injured by the czech police, please contact the human rights at the above address -
they are filing a case against the police and are determined to bring them to justice
24 travellers eventually won their case against the police after the battle of the beanfield.
it is vital that we keep the pressure on in these violent times

I'm one of those that was present at the Beanfield and your right 24 of use took legal actions against the police:
"For three days (and nights), without adequate food, sleep and many to a cell, we filled police stations across the south of England. From Bristol, where I was taken, to Southampton and London. We were then charged with the serious offence of `Unlawful Assembly'. Most charges were eventually dropped after all of this.
Some had lost everything they had. Parents where frantic in locating children that had been taken into care. Vehicles had been taken to a `pound' some 25 miles away and people had to go through further humiliation in reclaiming what was left of their homes.
Twenty-four of us took out a civil action against the Chief Constable of Wiltshire for the wrongs that were done to us that day. "

Dear
Thank you for your e-mail in which you expressed your view about the police
action taken in Mlynec on 30/31 July 2005.
The events in Mlynec have initiated a widespread debate among Czech
politicians, media and the public. As the investigation of the circumstances
in which the police action was taken is still ongoing, the Czech Embassy can
make no official comment. However, careful consideration has been given to
your remarks and your concern has been communicated to relevant authorities
in the Czech Republic.

Can you explain why police attacked people who were preparing for an

What was the government and police motivation for these unprovoked attacks?
Look forward to hearing from you with an explanation.

"Last night at 10:00 PM I arrived at a party in the Spanish Fork canyon. I was excited to be there to listen to the great electronic artists that had traveled for to play for the crowd.
Before coming to the event I researched it extensively. The party was %100 percent legal and legit with all permits and necessary security required by law being acquired. The event was well organized, with garbage cans, porta potties, and rope lines blocking off parts of the area that you could no go into.
Now I want you to know that many people out there consider ravers a bunch of drug taking freaks. I also want you to know that that is a stereotype that is passed down through legions of undereducated parents, politicians, and media. There are many of us who are drug free party goers who attend these events for a pure love of the music.
So on to my point. At around 11:00 I was enjoying the good vibes and great music. Then at about 11:30 pm a helicopter began circling the party. Out of nowhere huge semis filled with national guard, swat, and the police rolled up. Soldiers came out of the bushes and rushed down to the party. Carrying M-16s, Ak-47s, nightsticks, and tazers. They proceeded to attack random people and push their might around on people who had done nothing wrong.
I saw about 7 people attacked (before being forced to leave). I saw two of them right in front of me. One was a guy who was walking around with a camcorder stunned at what was happening. A soldier told him to give him the camera now. The raver said no it is my camera. The soldier then proceeded to grab the camera, throw it to the ground and then began beating the kid. In the end they threw him to the ground violently an put their knee into his back while handcuffing him. All for wanting to keep his property. When I last saw him he was knocked out and unmoving.
Another girl next to me said to one of the soldiers that she didn't know how to get home as they had just arrested her friend. The soldier told her to walk home. My friend tried to grab her to bring her with us, but the soldier began yelling that she had touched him (which she hadn't). WIthin seconds, five soldiers had jumped on her and were literally beating the crap out of this innocent women. She was punched in the face, thrown to the ground, and kicked while down. All for worrying how to get home safely. She is now suing.
The soldiers proceeded to attack anyone with cameras or camcorders, obviously wanting to restrict the film that got out about it. This was not a legal attack, it was a blatant violation on our rights as American citizens. And the swat, police, politicians who authorized this, and the national guard knew this. That is why they were removing potential evidence.
We were treated as terrorists, innocent kids without weapons or even violent thoughts in their minds were manhandled, treated like terrorists, and forced to stop doing what we were by constitutional rights allowed to be doing. Our rights were completely removed from us. It was if we had visited the 1960s or communist China.
I hope for the sake of the American people that the news media does not let the lies of the government blind them to what truly happened last night. This could happen anywhere to anyone not just ravers, so America DON'T LET THIS STAND!My story for anyone that is browsing the site:

UTAH RAVERS TREATED LIKE TERRORISTS! EVOL INTENT'S ACCOUNT OF THE INCIDENT!
23.08.2005 00:01
Stone Me!
I've been crying about the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, in this country, that made so many from my tribe, push off to Europe, out of the UK. Then the French, Spanish and German authorities noted this migration, and enacted laws to make the activity as naughty there, as here, thus they hope to stem the tide by removing the reason to travel to their countries. So, there have been reports of police violence in Spain and France, and then a really bad one in Czech. Now, a small fairy on the CyberBuss has sent me this account from Utah. Oh god, whatever next!!

Hit The Decks :: From SchNews 509
26.08.2005 11:49
In case you thought it was just corporate-sanitised festivals that
were turning all 1984, don't worry. Underground parties abroad are
proving they can attract even more brutal Big Brother tactics.
Last Saturday Versus II, a 1,500-strong legal rave in Utah (home
of bigamy), USA (home of the free), was closed in a huge raid
involving SWAT teams and the Utah National Guard as well as large
numbers of police. Soldiers with assault rifles stormed the stage
to get the music off, and tear gas, dogs, stun guns and a
low-flying helicopter were used to disperse the crowd. Ravers were
kicked to the ground and beaten with batons and rifle butts.
People who tried to film the bust had their cameras taken or
smashed. And just to prove that cops do have a sense of humour,
they nicked all the bouncers for possession of drugs they'd
confiscated from people on the door. The organisers of the party
have set up a website - www.music-versus-guns.org to publish
personal reports and footage that didn't get confiscated.
Meanwhile in the Czech Republic there has been a wave of
anti-police demonstrations across the country this month, after
riot cops were used to break up the CzechTek free festival on July
31. 1,300 police waded into the teknival in Mlynec with water
cannons, batons, lashings of tear gas and a tank, claiming that
they needed to act to stop people trespassing to get to the party.
Ravers fought back with bottles and sticks.
Explaining why he authorised the raid, Prime Minister Jiri
Paroubek said: "These were no dancing children [but] dangerous
people with anarchist proclivities and international links," who
"provoke massive demonstrations against the peaceful society" and
are likely to spread "AIDS, jaundice and salmonella". The
'peaceful' Czech society didn't buy it, and Paroubek has seen his
popularity cut in half with dozens of angry protests. The Czech
government are now considering passing a new CJA-style law
allowing local authorities to ban raves if they think they're a
threat to "peace, property, or state security". For more Czech

Cuddly venture capitalist Richard Branson likes a laugh, and
making loads of money. And he did both at the V Festival last
weekend.
The festival has a noble tradition of trying out fun new
surveillance techniques on punters, and this year was no
exception. In order to keep festie-goers safe from terrorists and
the great unwashed, CCTV cameras were stuck all over the place and
wired up to face recognition software to scan for known
troublemakers. Letters were sent to 250 undesirables asking them
not to come.
In previous years they have used Automatic Number Plate
Recognition to target known offenders, as well as using palm-wipe
drug testing kits on attendees. Although anyone asked to be drug
tested has the right to refuse, the police can regard the refusal
as reasonable suspicion of possession of drugs and conduct a full
search.
SchNEWS commends the V organisers on their bold 'Brave New World'
theme and we look forward to visiting next year's Ambient Cavity
Search Tent.

Paroubek about Czechtek

"Basically, there was no police strategy of communication with the public," he said, giving the British police's communication with people after the terrorist attacks in London as an example for their Czech colleagues to follow."

So it is the Met and Sir Ian Blair's recent performances that will be the new Czech Police standard to deal with the next Czechtek if I read correctly...
